Gentleman, of Serlby, Blyth, and of Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire.

Background

He was baptised on 2 May 1692 at Harworth, Nottinghamshire.[1]

Family history

His great-grandson, Rev Richard Taylor, recorded: "The Spencer family had lands at Barnby Dun, Sheffield, Rotherham, and also at Serlby near Tickhill, and are most probably the same stock as the Spencers of Bramley Grange and Attercliffe Hall, near Sheffield, as they had lands in the same parts and were allied to several branches of the Taylor family as well as the Spencers of Hodsock. The Barnby Dun estate was sold for £7,000 which was thought to be much below it's real value. My great-grandfather Spencer was twice related to the Duke of Marlborough, but how I know not."

Marriages and family

On 20 October 1720 he married 1ly Grace Ward, without issue. "Robertus Spencer & Gratia Ward."[2] She was buried at Harworth on 17 September 1725.[3]

In November 1729 he married 2ly Mary Furness, of Ackworth, Yorkshire, widow and co-heiress of Thomas Herrot, of Thorpe-in-Balne, Barnby upon Don, Yorkshire. "Robert Spencer & Mary Harrat."[4] She was formerly the widow of Mr Marsh, of Yorkshire. They had issue four children.

Death and burial

He died on 25 January 1765 at Hodsock Priory, Nottinghamshire. He was buried in St Mary & St Martin Church, Blyth, Nottinghamshire. His widow survived him by one year and died in January 1766. She was buried with him.

Legacy

In his Will he left £22,000 each to his sons, Robert and John Spencer.

Notes

Robert Spencer's great-grandson, Rev Richard Taylor recorded (probably incorrect or may relate to another ancestor) that Spencer married 3ly a Mrs Clarke, of Wiseton, near Clayworth, a wealthy widow, without issue. He stated she was the owner of an estate at Wiseton, which was afterwards sold to Mr Richard Acklom, whose only daughter, Esther, was married to John Charles Spencer, Lord Althorp, afterwards 3rd Earl Spencer, who made it his residence.

He also recorded a family oral history that his 3rd wife was nearly buried alive in a coma-like state but awoke in the coffin when it was bumped while being carried into the church.
