With his family they went to live in America.
He was baptised on 29 May 1737 at Banby upon Don, Yorkshire.[1]
On the death of his father in 1765, John and his elder brother each inherited £22,000.
On 20 May 1765 he married Elizabeth Stovin, the daughter of Jonathan Stovin and Dorothy Hartshorne, and they had three daughters and three sons. She was the younger sister of Dorothy Stovin who married his brother Robert.

In about 1770 with their elder (at least three) children, the family went to live in America.
