Biography

This profile is part of the Spoor Name Study.

Henry, son of William Henry Spoor and Mary Ryman,[1] was born 27 November 1889 in Buckeye, Texas.[1][2][3] He was raised in Matagorda County, where his father William Henry (age 39) cultivated his own land in 1900.[4] His labor supported his family comprised of his mother Mary (40), Henry Melvin (11), William Allen (16, farmhand), Addie Laura (14), John Grady (9), Eugenia F. (7, shown as daughter, but this is Eugene Franklin), David Ezell (4) and Victoria (2, shown as daughter, but this is Victor Deb).[4]

His sister Addie married in 1908,[5] leaving a family consisting of his parents William Henry (age 49, truck farmer) and Mary (48), William Allen (25, farmhand on the homestead), Melvin Henry (20, farmhand), John (18, farmhand), Virginia [sic] (16), David (14), Victor (12), Cygred Elector (9) and a boarding farmhand.[6] Mary reported that she had given birth to three more children between 1900 and 1910, but that only one had lived.[6]

During his registration for the First World War, he was living in Simpsonville, Texas, and working as a canal foreman for the Texas Irrigation Company in Beadle.[3] He was described as of medium height and stout build with blue eyes and light hair.[3] Henry did serve during that war.[1]

By 1920, most of his siblings had established their own homes. The three remaining sons, including Henry, all worked the land with their father.[7] Residing on the homestead farm were William H. (age 59), Mary (59), Eugene (26), Henry M. (30) and Victor D. (21).[7]

His brother Eugene married in 1925 and moved away;[8] Victor married in 1928, but remained on the homestead.[9] William H. (age 69) spent his final years with his wife Mary (69), Henry M. (40), Victor D. (32) and his wife Letricia (17).[10]

On 27 November 1935 in Matagorda County, Henry Melvin married Lydia Edith Parker,[11] daughter of Jacob Lewis Parker and Minnie Mary Holderman.[12]

His father William Henry died 14 December 1937 in Galveston[13] and was buried in Ashby Cemetery in El Maton, Matagorda, Texas.[13][14]

The newly-weds established their own home in Brazoria County, where they lived in 1940. Henry M. was 50 and cultivated his own property.[15] Lydia (age 43) reports that she is highly educated, having completed five years of college,[15] while Henry had finished one year of high school.[15]

The couple had no children before Henry died 12 May 1967 in Sugar Land, Texas, from acute coronary failure complicated by hemolytic anemia.[2][1][16] He was buried in Angleton Cemetery in Angleton.[1]
