Biography

This profile is part of the Spoor Name Study.

John, son of William Henry Spoor and Mary Ryman,[1] was born 10 December 1891 in Buckeye, Texas.[1][2] He grew up in Matagorda County, where by 1900 his father William Henry (age 39) was cultivating his own land.[3] The family included his mother Mary (40), John Grady (9), and his siblings William Allen (16, farmhand), Addie Laura (14), Henry Melvin (11), Eugenia F. (7, shown as daughter, but this is Eugene Franklin), David Ezell (4) and Victoria (2, shown as daughter, but this is Victor Deb).[3]

His sister Addie married in 1908,[4] leaving a family consisting of William Henry (age 49, truck farmer), Mary (48), William Allen (25, farmhand on the homestead), Melvin Henry (20, farmhand), John (18, farmhand), Virginia [sic] (16, Eugene), David (14), Victor (12), Cygred Elector (9) and a boarding farmhand.[5] Mary reported that she had given birth to three more children between 1900 and 1910, but that only one had lived.[5]

When he registered for the draft in 1917 with his brothers, he was described as tall with a medium build, gray eyes and light hair.[2] He was working as a fireman for the Texas Irrigation Company in Beadle, Texas.[2] He was a veteran of the war.[1]

A few months later, on 21 August 1917 in Matagorda County, he married Lorraine Frances Mann[6] with whom he had at least three daughters.[7] In 1930, John (age 38) supported his wife Loraine (29) and their three children aged 9, 7, and eight months as a boiler maker for an oil refinery in Jefferson, Texas.[7]

By 1940, John G. (age 47) was a tank builder to provide a living for his wife Lorraine (39), their 10-year-old daughter and one-year-old granddaughter in Jefferson County.[8]

He died from an acute coronary occlusion on 8 December 1951 in Port Arthur, Texas.[1] and was buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves, Texas.[9]
