Biography

This profile is part of the Spoor Name Study.

Addie, daughter of William Henry Spoor and Mary Ryman,[1] was born 17 June 1886 in Matagorda County, Texas.[1] By 1900, her father William Henry (age 39) was cultivating his own land in Matagorda.[2] His labor supported his family comprised of Mary (40), William Allen (16, farmhand), Addie Laura (14), Henry Melvin (11), John Grady (9), Eugenia F. (7, shown as daughter, but this is Eugene Franklin), David Ezell (4) and Victoria (2, shown as daughter, but this is Victor Deb).[2]

On 12 April 1908 in Matagorda County, she married Harvey H. Foster[3] with whom she had one son, Manford T. Foster (b. 26 June 1909; d. 10 April 1939),[4][5] and one daughter, Mary Ella (b. 26 March 1911;[6] d. unknown).

After two years of marriage Harvey H (age 33) was a rice farmer on rented land in Matagorda County.[7] He supported his wife Addie (23) and their son [Manford] Foster (nine months and still unnamed).[7] Their daughter was born in 1911,[6] meaning the household in 1920 was composed of Harvey H. (age 43, general farmer), Addie (33), Manford L. (10) and Mary E. (8).[8]

Manford was living on his own with three lodgers next to his father by 1930, when the family home included only Harvey (age 52, rice farmer), Addie L. (46), and Mary Ella (19).[9] The couple buried their 29-year-old son Manford in 1939 after an automobile accident that fractured his skull.[4]

Harvey (age 62) and Addie (52) continued to live in Matagorda County in 1940.[10] The couple had the services of a live-in manservant.[10] Harvey had taken up cattle ranching in addition to continuing as a rice farmer.[10] The census showed that Harvey had a 7th grade education and Addie completed five years of schooling.[10]

Harvey, who died 14 August 1948 in Bay City from cerebral apoplexy,[11] was described in 1942 as 5'10" tall, weighing 225 lbs. with hazel eyes, gray hair and a ruddy complexion.[12]

Addie died from heart disease on 3 April 1973 in Bay City, Texas,[1] and was buried there in Cedarvale Cemetery[13] beside her husband.[14]
