Biography

David Stephenson (son of Zadock Stephenson and Esther unknown) was born about 1801. He married Lydia”Lidey” Gabi (or Gubbi or Gubbe) on June 14, 1821 in Union County, Indiana and died after 1850, probably in Missouri. He purchased property in Union County, Indiana from his father in 1824 and sold it in 1827. They moved to Montgomery County, Indiana prior to 1830. When Missouri entered the Union in 1821 the area that is now the Northwestern part of the state was Indian territory. In 1836 William Clark persuaded the Indians to sell this land in what became the Platt Purchase, ratified in 1837. This purchase added two million acres of fertile farm land to Missouri. This land was divided into eleven counties. Soon this land was divided into sections and offered to settlers. Soon the call went out “Land in Northwest Missouri”. Lured by fertile land many settlers came by way of wagons and steamboats from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and other places. David and his father were part of a large group of Stephenson and Sweem families that moved from Indiana to this region of Missouri by way of Springfield, Illinois in 1842. David settled in the eastern part of Buchanan County, a few miles west of his father’s property in the western part of Clinton County, Missouri. Lydia appears to have died prior to 1850, probably in Missouri.
