Biography

Zadock Stephenson (son of Robert Stephenson and unknown) was born about 1763 in Maryland, and died about1856, probably in Missouri. He was a resident of Worcester County, Maryland in 1778, at which time he signed an oath of Allegiance to the state of Maryland. He served in the American Revolution as a private in the Worcester County militia, Captain George Spencer's Company of the Snow Hill Battalion, classed August 15, 1780. He married (1) Esther unknown prior to 1783 as they appear on a tax list in Worcester County, Maryland at that time. They emigrated to Kentucky about 1790. His name is on the tax lists for Fayette County, Kentucky (1792); Bourbon County, Kentucky (1793); and Harrison County, Kentucky (1794-1802). His residence in Harrison County was on Raven Creek in the Northern portion of the county. He served on a grand jury in Harrison County in June of 1800. His brothers James and David both lived on Raven Creek during this time period. Zadock moved to Hamilton County, Ohio prior to 1805 and on April 1, 1807 his name appeared on a list of those with unclaimed letters at the Post Office in Cincinnati, Ohio. His name was on tax lists for Butler County, Ohio, 1807; and Hamilton County, Ohio (1810-1819). His 25 acre farm in Hamilton County was bought on April 13, 1810 and was near the Butler County line, approximately 14 miles east of the present Indiana state line. His first wife Ester had apparently died about 1814 and he married (2) Alice Appleton of Butler County, Ohio about 1815. In 1817 Zadock obtained a 160 acre land grant in what is now in the north west portion of Union County, Indiana. He owned several properties in Montgomery County, Indiana during the time period of 1828-1839. About 1842 he went to Missouri. Land records of Clinton County, Missouri show that he purchased 40 acres there in October of 1842. His farm was about 10 miles northwest of Plattsburg, Missouri. Here he built a 14 foot square dwelling house. He and Alice appeared in court in Gentry County, Missouri on July 7, 1854. Alice purchased property in Atchison County, Kansas in 1857. She is listed on the 1860 census in Atchison County, Kansas and the 1870 census as a blind resident of Chase County, Kansas.
