Memories of Evelyn LaVerne Stevens Garren:
My father bought the land for our house which was all woodland. His father had given him some money. My father set up a sawmill and made the timbers for the house and barns. He furnished the new house in 1936.
Memories of Rucker Mator Stevens:
My father owned several teams of work horses and dump carts. He was employed by the railroad and helped scoop out parts of the mountain where the railroad was laid. (This was either West Virginia or Western Virginia. The railroads were important to the coal mining that was very big at that time.) He saved that money and bought his farm. He built the "Little House" from timber he cut in clearing new fields for planting.
