Biography

Hugh Stewart was born about 1636 in Chatham, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay, British American Colonies. He was the son of James Stewart (1600–1662) and his wife Isobel Boyd (1610–1638).

Ensign Hugh Stuard or Stewart was of Yarmouth as early as 1674, where he settled the estate of Thomas Phelps or Phillips.(Plymouth Col. Rec. V, 153, 273) From a tax levied in 1676 to defray the expense of the Indian War, it appears that he was the fourth largest taxpayer in the town.(Freeman, History of Cape Cod,II, 195)

He purchased of Thomas Crow, by deed dated August 13, 1683, the farm of the latter at Seaquanset, with the dwelling house and other buildings erected by Crow thereon, and removed thither soon after. Seven years later, by deed dated September 8, 1690, he purchased of Sarah Covell, widow, a tract west of and adjoining his other land, having bargained for the same with William Nickerson Sen. before his decease.

He was constable in 1685, took the oath of freeman in 1690, was selectman in 1699 and held other local offices. He was also one of the first members of the church in Manomoit.

He died on 25 January 1716 in Chatham, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay, British American Colonies.

His will, dated March 5, 1710-11.[1], was proved on January 25, 1715-16[2] He mentioned his wife Wait, and his children, Joseph Steward (executor with Joseph Doane Esqr.), Ebenezer Steward, Samuel Steward, Michael Steward, Temperance Steward, Catarina Nickerson, Marcy Hall, Joanna, and his grandchild Lydia Covell. His inventory was taken on 24 January 1715/16 in Chatham.[3]

Stewart-53997 and Stewart-10472 appear to represent the same person because: Duplicate. Birth year of 1650 seems like a guess. Daughter, Temperance was mentioned in his will.

Something is wrong. The two daughters named Temperance do not match.

Thanks for catching this. I was looking at what his bio said and not the Temperance connected as a child. Doing more research.

I couldn't find definite proof of the two daughters and who they married. I placed the merge under unmerge matched.

Stewart-53997 and Stewart-10472 are not ready to be merged because: Daughter Temperance needs more proof as to who she married. Were there two Temperance Stewards in the Barnstable area? Did she marry Benjamin Phillips, a man 30 years older than her? or did she marry Elisha Dunham and move to Connecticut?
