Biography

John Stewart is a member of Clan Stewart.

John was the eldest son of John Stewart and Mary Stirling. In her family history of the Shaw Stewarts, Janet S. Bolton (p.25) states that John was infeft in the family estates of Blackhall and Ardgowan on 4 May 1658 during the lifetime of his grandfather Sir Archibald Stewart, but died 23 June 1658 at about the age of 24. It is not known if John ever married, and there is no record of John ever having children. After John's death, his younger brother Archibald was next designated the heir of the family estates.

It should be noted that earlier writers on the Stewarts of Blackhall and Ardgowan -- including Janet S. Bolton whose 1989 family history has been the most complete to date -- erroneously show John as the first husband of Barbara Scott, daughter of Sir William Scott of Clerkington and Barbara Dalmahoy.[1] Notably, however, Burke's Commoners (1838) had only stated that Barbara's first husband was "a son of Stewart, of Blackhall." In fact, Barbara's husband was John's uncle David Stewart of Mearns, as shown at David's profile.
