Biography
John Janney was originally known as John Swinney, "son of a single woman" per 1847 Franklin County court records. He was known as John Swinney upon his marriage to my gg grandmother, Malinda Hale per Commonwealth of VA Bureau of Vital Statistics marriage license.[1] A genetic link was recently established on my Family Tree DNA profile with the Janney family of Loudon County, WV. I was just informed that Issac Janney [b about 1751] and Hannah Janney had a son named John [b abt 1788] who encountered Anne Swinney [1790-1870] and who gave birth to John Janney.

He was a Confederate soldier who applied for a Confederate veteran's pension in Roanoke VA in 1900 at age 72.
He had been declared a deserter {according to family legend} because he left the ranks to check on his large family and his crops. Nonetheless, he received his pension.

Thanks for your message. To clarify, this gentleman's Last Name At Birth is See notes below. It needs to be Swinney. To fix this you need to:
- click the Edit Tab.
- click the [edit] link beside the box called Last Name at Birth
- Enter Swinney into Correct Last Name at Birth then click on the green button Correct the Last Name at Birth
- Delete Janney from the Other Last Names field.
- Replace Swinney in Current Last Name field with Janney.
I'm grateful that fate brought my ancestors to Australia enabling me to be born here, so I understand why your father loved it here. On the other hand, one of my aunts married a "Yank" during WW II and migrated to the USA. She lives in California with her family and loves her adopted home.
