Biography

Birth

William Twentyman Taylor was born at Swellendam, Cape Colony on 29 June 1857. William Taylor is son of Thomas Taylor, (general dealer Swellendam) and Hannah Margaret Parsley. He was baptized by Pastor Baker, in the Anglican Christ church on 09/08/1857. Present at the baptism was a frequent visitor to Swellendam, and friend of Thomas Taylor, a Mr. William Twentyman, a famous silversmith in the Cape at the time. other witnesses Thomas Tomlinson, Kezia Morgenrood and John Charles Morgenrood. So William carried Mr. Twentyman's name. Photograph of baptism taken by me at Swellendam Museum in 2014, under authority of the curator/historian. [1]

Education

William Taylor was educated at Grammer School in Swellendam, and later moved to the Paarl, Cape Colony.

Occupation

He worked as a clerk, and learnt to become an accountant at Paarl.

Marriage

William Twentyman Taylor met Engela Hendrina de Beer, of the Paarl, daughter of Magdalena Maria Myburgh, and Zacharias Johannes de Beer. They were married with a license at the Paarl, obtained on 30th October 1882, by the resident Magistrate.[2] married 1 November 1882, in the Strooidak kerk - Paarl. [3] Soon started a family as was tradition in those days.

Occupation

William continues as a senior clerk at Paarl, however decided to move to Pretoria in the ZAR in about 1892. He received his letter of Naturalisation from # ZAR Government in 5 December 1894.

  1. He obtained a post as Inspector of the Office at Pretoria ZAR - Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek on 01 February 1899, meaning he was a civil servant in the offices of President Paul Kruger.

It is said that William fought alongside the boers in the Anglo Boer War.

After the war William had decided to leave his post at the offices of the ZAR, which had now dissolved & have his own accounting business.

Accounting Business

William Taylor had became friends with gentleman, an accountant, Wouter J. Geerling and saw opportunity to expand business. Wouter, a Dutch immigrant arrived in Pretoria around 1887, and prominent accountant. The new accounting business was called Taylor & Geerling, and was Established 1903. Address: Taylor & Geerling, Erasmus Building, 29 Church Square, Pretoria. Their business was a registered Accountants & Auditors, insurance and estate agents, & sworn translators English, Dutch, French, & German, and Portuguese; they also owned rights to various agencies: Salamander fire insurance, Railway passenger assurance, National Plate Glass insurance company, London & Scottish assurance, and more... Further they were secretaries for various agents and estates. So many options are offered - all under one roof.

Retirement Occupation

On retirement, William Twentyman Taylor sold his share of the business Taylor & Geerling to his son Zacharias Johannes Taylor who was well educated in the Paarl.

He purchased a farm at Kroondal near Rustenburg. The farm was named Oorzaak. William Taylor could not sit at home, so he got employment as a manager at Magaliesburg Tobacco Growers Association; this was a daily drive about 10 miles... He was here for a few years.

Enna continued with gardening duties on the farm Together he and Engela had 7 children. They all received a good education to follow good careers . They further often took their grand children on most holidays, this including Alfred Taylor Pittman. He was s.o. William ( Judge) Pittman & the late Magdalena (Madge) Taylor (William & Engela) daughter. These school holidays were in The Cape, or at Paarl, or at Oorzaak the farm. William & Engela were very keen on gardening.

At School Holidays, he and Engela were well entertained by his grand children. They found him to be strict and stern, this all for a good cause, as his grandchildren were well disciplined.

Engela his wife, passed away 14 September 1932 at Oorzaak, and is buried at Rustenburg Cemetery. Oorzaak was sold to son Harold Myburgh.....

Death

Soon after Enna's death William Twentyman Taylor had moved to Pretoria.: 67 Johnston street, Sunnyside. Here he became senile, and was placed in the mental institution in Pretoria Transvaal, where he died at age 80 on 17 October 1936. Death notice MHG 95432 refers to his death and signed by son H.M. Myburgh. [4] William Twentyman Taylor (widower), an accountant (Own business) who aged 80 had died. Cause of his death.: Myocarditis (1 month duration) & Chronic Asthmatio Bronchitis. According to his death notice file - He had passed on/sold all assets to his family, prior to his death, and left no estate.

Tom and Bill, his grand children visited him often on his farm during the holidays, and had plenty fun. He was stern and strict as a father and grandfather, yet had strong family values.

Worked in Transvaal under Paul Kruger as an inspector. Fought with the Boers in Anglo Boer War. After the war he established "Taylor Auditors" as he was a registered accountant in Pretoria. Later this became "Taylor and Geerling Accountants" in Sunnyside Pretoria. Later managed by his son Zacharias Taylor.

Hereafter to Rustenburg, farm OOrzaak, managed Magaliesburg Tobacco Planters Association.
