Daniel Tichenor is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A115315.

Daniel Tichenor served in the Revolutionary War under Captain Isaac Halsey and in Colonel Silvanus Seely's Regiment, New Jersey Militia, Eastern Battalion.

He was born about 1742, the son of Joseph Tichenor and Elizabeth Burgess. His first marriage was to Catherine Elizabeth Wade, about 1761. They had the following children:[1][2]

  • Joseph Tichenor–christened 23 May 1762 in Morristown, New Jersey[3]
  • Daniel Tichenor (1764-1832)
  • Phoebe Tichenor–christened 10 May 1767 in Morristown, New Jersey[4]
  • Jane Tichenor–born 4 May 1769 in Morristown, New Jersey.[5]
  • Elizabeth Tichenor– born 10 May 1771 in Morristown, New Jersey.[6]
  • Jacob Tichenor (1773-1853)
  • Timothy Tichenor (1775-1856)
  • Sarah is identified in the record of the First Prebyterian Church of Morristown, as a daughter of Daniel who died of consumption at age 19 on 26 February 1776, which would be a month and a half after Catharine (Wade) Tichenor died of consumption.[7] Her implied birthdate would be prior to Daniel and Catherine's presumed marriage. One published genealogy has concluded that it is unlikely that this Sarah was a daughter of Daniel and Catherine.[1]

Catherine Elizabeth (Wade) Tichenor (1736-1776) died on 8 January 1776.[8] On 6 May 1776, he married Anna (Byram) Condict, the widow of Peter Condict III (abt.1744-1774).[9][10] Anna and Daniel had the following children:[1][7]

Daniel exchanged his farm in Morris Co., New Jersey for lands on Green River in Ohio Co., Kentucky in 1791[11] and brought his family to Kentucky. He was very disappointed in the wildness of this land and never took his family there. The family, with some of their neighbors near Morristown, moved in wagons to Pittsburg, where they bought a boat and descended the Ohio River to Louisville, Kentucky and then to Nelson Co., Kentucky. He there purchased 300 acres on Plumb Run in Nelson Co., Kentucky in 1795. He and his family moved there in 1796 and resided there until his death.

Daniel died on 12 April 1804, and was buried in a family burial ground that he had laid out in Nelson County.[1]. The epitah on his gravestone expresses his religious beliefs:

AT HOME IN NEW JERSEY HE ENJOYED
THE CONFIDENCE & ESTEEM DUE TO HIM
AS A CHRISTIAN IN FAITH AND PRACTICE
CONTINUING STEADFAST UNTIL DEATH
READER WOULD THOU FOLLOW HIM TO GLORY
THEN COPY HIS RIGHT EXAMPLE

His will, dated 22 April 1803, was proved and filed in court on 14 May 1804. His widow Anna Tichenor and sons Jacob Tichenor and Peter Tichenor were sworn as executors. The will includes the following provisions:[12]

  • Anna was given all of his real and personal property in Nelson County for use and their education of their children during her widowhood. She was also give 70 pounds and the right to make bequests if she remarried.
  • Son Peter Tichenor to receive 5 pounds current money.
  • Son Jared Tichenor to receive 5 pounds like money.
  • Son Jonas Tichenor to receive 5 pounds like money.
  • Son Silas Tichenor to receive 5 pounds like money.
  • Son James to receive 5 pounds like money
  • Daughter Phebe Sutton to receive 30 pounds in property.
  • Daughter Jane Mash to receive 15 pounds in property.
  • Daughter Sarah Langford to receive 5 pounds.
  • Daughter Anna Tichenor to receive 5 pounds.
  • His four sons from his first marriage–Joseph, Daniel, Jacob and Timothy–were each given 600 acres out of the 2500 acres on the Green River [in Ohio County] that he had purchased from John Howell, but had never been able to move to because of the wildness of the area, with a condition mentioned below.[11]
  • The four eldest sons were charged with "paying a legacy to [his] daughter Elisabeth of thirteen pounds each one the Interest to be paid her annually after [his] demise and the principal to be paid at the discretion of my Executors as they see she has need."
  • His youngest son James was given the remaining 100 acres on the Green River from the first purchase of 2500 acres, plus an additional purchase of 150 acres from John Howell.

Shortly following Daniel's death, children from both of his marriages and both of his wife Anna's marriages began their migration to Ohio County, Kentucky, some taking possession of the land he had purchased that had been too wild to settle in the 1790s. These events are discussed in Anna's profile.
