Biography

Frances Townshend Washington, daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Dade) Washington,[1] was born 18 August 1767.[2][3]

Frances married (1) Thornton Washington in 1786 in King George County, Virginia[4] and (2) Griffin Stith[5]. Her brother Needham Langhorne Washington names her Frances T. Stith in his 1833 will (proved 1835) and also made a bequest to his nephew Samuel Washington.

Note: She was not named in her brother Lawrence's 1809 will, and her brother Needham left bequests to her and his nephew Samuel Washington in his 1833 will (proved 1835).[6] Perhaps the death date of June 14, 1788 is Thornton's? Also, Alexandria is an Independent City, and I found no parish named Jefferson, so I'm not sure what's meant by her death location of "Jefferson, Alexandria, Virginia." Correction Note: The above cited source is incorrect. The will of Nedham L. Washington does NOT leave a bequest to his sister Frances T. Washington. His will simply leaves a residual of stock and other property not devised to be divided among the children of his three sisters, if any of these children be dead, to their children.[7] H. Kleine, 16 Jan 2022.

Frances Washington Townsend (1767-c1803)[8]

Frances married Griffin Stith Jr. on June 12, 1788.[8]

Her husband was born on August 24, 1753 in Brunswick County, Virginia. His patriotic service was as a member of the Committee of Safety in King George County, Virginia. He was also a resident of Northumberland County. He died in Jefferson County, Virginia after 1808.[9]

They had at least one child: Their daughter Elizabeth Frances Stith was born on March 12, 1794 and married (2) Henry Ward in 1818.[9][8]

Research Notes

Location Notes: St. Paul's Parish did not serve colonial King George County. From Parishes of Virginia:

St. Paul's Parish, formed before 1702, served Stafford County to 1776 and King George County to aft 1785. "In 1776, the boundary between Stafford Co and King George Co was changed, and St. Paul's Parish shifted counties."[10]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Frances by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Frances:

Can we please do something with Frances' death date since there is no evidence she was alive in 1809 when Lawrence died, or thereafter? The published misinformation regarding her being given a bequest in the will of Nedham L. Washington has been debunked, and Griffin's mother being so concerned about who was influencing the minor child Susan in 1810 strongly supports Frances was dead.

previous comments indicate the nickname "Kate" is not supported for this Frances (who is referred to as Fanny - page 420).

"Kate" is probably Katherine Washington, daughter of John Washington, who married her cousin John Washington.

Hi!

I changed birth info in datafields & added text/citations to support changes. The location was given as St. Paul's Parish, King George, but prior to 1776, St. Paul's Parish served Stafford County, not King George County (I added Research Notes/Location Notes with details).

I did not see support in the text for the birth date of 8 April 1767. If there is a source for that date, please add it to Research Notes (and move the text/citation with 18 August date there too).

The 18 August 1767 birth date is from "Extracted Records" of St. Paul's Parish - see https://www.jstor.org/stable/4242375 (page 365), where that date is listed as her birth date. However, it's possible that it is a baptism date instead (and, if so, it's also possible that "8 April" was a "mis-translation" of either 8/4 or 4/8 - 4 August or 8 April, depending on whether you interpret x/x as day/month or month/day). A 2-week gap between birth and baptism is not really unusual, while a 4-month gap would be.

Washington-184 and Townsend-8414 appear to represent the same person because: With exception of last name choice they are same person, same dates same spouse
posted on Townsend-8414 (merged) by David Gray
Washington-184 and Washington-2178 appear to represent the same person because: Same husband. Same birth date. Same death date/location. Please merge. Thank you.
Robert - sorry for the confusion. Yes, the merge should happen. The Frances who married Thornton, then Griffin, did not die in 1788 (her brother left her a bequest in 1833) and appears in the article cited as "Fanny" (if you clicked the link from the e-mail, you'll need to delete the coding from the URL, or you can click the link from the comment on Washington-726 - same for the link to her profile... clickable from here - the comment on the profile page - not the e-mail you receive with a copy of the comment).

I had posted to Washington-726 in case that profile manager intended her to be a different Frances (one known as Kate and d 1788) than the Frances who m Thornton Washington & had a son named Samuel.

I gotta work on my communication skills :D

Cheers, Liz Cheers, Liz

no, the merge should happen. But the death date/location & the nickname appear to be for a different Frances Washington. The Frances who married Thornton did not die in 1788. The article link you can't open shows the Frances m Thornton as "Fanny" (although I've heard both Fanny and Kate (and Frank) as nicknames for Frances, it is unlikely one Frances would go by both Fanny and Kate).

Try clicking the link from the comment on the profile page instead of from the e-mail.

I can't open your hyperlink. Are you now suggesting that the two individuals should not be merged?

Hi again! Another article in the series shows this Frances as "Fanny" (see page 420)

It seems 1767 birth King George & m Thornton/son Samuel, m Griffin Stith is daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth Dade. The nickname Kate & death info of June 14, 1788 in Jefferson, Alexandria, Virginia is probably a different Frances's.

Washington-726 and Washington-184 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! date's the same between these profiles & the following article presents information on Frances & her family (see pp 99, 101). She married (1) Thornton Washington & (2) Griffin Stith. Please merge. Thanks!

Washington-1111 and Washington-184 appear to represent the same person because: and having found two fathers, I found a duplicate for Washington-1111. Please merge these also (and one more coming - a duplicate profile, wife of Thornton Washington). Please merge. Thanks!
