DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Shem by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Shem:

I found my mother's family record book, Shem Tyson 1778-1825 was married to Lucretia Adams. They lived in Pitt County, N.C. According to oral family history, their son Archibald Tyson , who was not the eldest, left N.C. on horseback, traveled down the Appalachian Mountains (perhaps following the Cahawba Trail), and ended his journey in Lowndes County, Alabama. He married Sarah Jane Warren on 6/8/1843, and they had 10 children. Their 7th child, Shem Arthur, was my Great Grandfather. Shem Arthur married Mary Augusta Toler on 5/7/1879 in Selma, AL where they are also buried. I have a great deal of family history from family Bibles, genealogical records as well as oral history. Four of us own Shem Arthur's 960 acre plantation in Montgomery, AL, which is listed on the Historic Registry.

It's late and I can't find my family tree but ... these Tyson's lived in Pitt County, North Carolina on the Tar River near modern day Greenville. Noah (his father?) and Moses (his uncle?) served in the Revolutionary War and were the ancestors used by me and my mother for our DAR memberships. The Tyson's married into the May or Maye family and there is a monument to May and a DAR Chapter named for him.
