Biography

Name

Name: Francis Unknown[1]

Francis's parents and her last name at birth are unknown, although she has often been confused with Robert Foote's son Francis, due to the ambiguously-gendered name and similar estimated ages.

Birth

Frances ______, the wife of Abraham Newell was in England about 1594 (age 40 in 1634).[2]

On 30 April 1634 the Newell family enrolled at Ipswich, England, as passengers on the ship Francis for New England:[2] [3] [4]

Abraham Newell aged 50
Francis Newell, his wife aged 40
Fayth Newell aged 15 (with family of John Bernard)
Grace Newell aged 13 (with family of William Westwood)
Abraham Newell aged 8
John Newell aged 5
Isaaccke Newell aged 2

Marriage

Abraham and Francis probably married c. 1619 or before, in England, going by their eldest child Fayth's age of fourteen years on passenger list in 1634. [1][5]

Immigrated: Sailed from Ipswich, England on the "Francis", under the command of Captain John Cutting

Death

Died: 13 Jan 1682, Roxbury, Connecticut [1] Mrs. Frances Newell outlived her husband ten years, dying 11 month 16, 1682. Rev. Mr. Eliot recorded her death as follows: "Mother Newell died neere 100 y. old." This was pure guesswork on his part about her age. Granting she was nearly 100 she would hav been past fifty in 1634, or too old to have been the mother of Jacob Newell. [9]

Burial

Buried: 16 Jan 1682/3, Roxbury, Connecticut [1]

Research Notes

Not the daughter of Robert Foote Francis (Unknown) Newell is sometimes thought to be the daughter of Robert Foote. However, Robert refers to his son Francis Foote in his will: "....To son Daniel forty pounds at four and twenty. The same each to sons Nathaniel, Francis, and Joshua at like ages." To date, no evidence of Francis Newell's last name at birth has been found.

No other evidence exists that she was a Foote.
Her LNAB is unknown. Her parents are unknown.
Please do not change her LNAB from Unknown or attach her to parents, unless new high-quality evidence is found and a consensus is reached in discussion on the Wikitree G2G forum.

Origins in Ipswich, Suffolk, England: The Newell family immigrated to New England from Ipswich, but their residence(s) before that is unknown. They could be from that area, or another location that would likely use Ipswich as a departure point. His certificate of conformity, which might indicate where he had been living seems to have not survived.

Children's Marriages:

The marriages of Abraham's sons Abraham, Jr., Jacob, Isaac, and daughter Grace are given in the Roxbury Vital Records; also births of his son's children. [10]

Hi,

Just wanted to explain that my mtDNA results, U5a1b1, conflict with two other testers whose haplogroup is t2b15. So I have an error in my chain of links to the Common Ancestor, Francis UNK Newell (abt. 1594 - 1682), which includes this profile.

I’m working to find the error. Thanks.

The surname and origins of this woman are unknown. Can the birthplace of Ipswich, Suffolk, England be removed as it reinforces the idea that she and Abraham were actually from Ipswich rather than they boarded the ship there. Edit: and remove the place of marriage as Ipswich in the biography as well.

Thanks, Jo, England Project

Done. Added a Research Note. It would be helpful at some point to have a list of areas that were likely to use which ports as their departure point.

The LNAB for this profile should be UNKNOWN""".

Source #307 shows only a daughter born to Nathaniel Foote, no further data, no marriage to Abraham Newell. Foote Family org. shows Frances dau. of Nathaniel Foote b. 1629, m. John Dickinson 1648 in Wethersfield, CT. The same source shows Francis dau of Robert Foote b. 1587, no further data.

Great Migration by Robert Anderson does not find any LNAB for Francis, wife of Abraham Newell, but she was b. 1594, listed as 40 yrs old in 1634.

Francis Newell, mother of children age 14, 13, 8, 5, 2 years old in 1634 logically age 40, (not 47).

No other Foote family listed on same passenger list. Foote family frequently migrated together: any Foote relatives in Roxbury?

Conclusion:

Sources don't support last name of Foote at birth.
Francis last name, according to Charles Robert Anderson, the primary authority for our Puritan Great Migration Project, shows her as "Francis Unknown". See Great Migration 1634-1635, M-P, pages 245 - 250, where she is listed under the profile for Abrahm Newell.

Please merge this profile into Francis Unknown-34341 with Unknown-34341 the Final ID#. thank you.

Foote-78 and UNKNOWN-34341 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge with UNKNOWN-34341 being the Final ID#. I'm detaching her connection to Robert and Joan (Brooke) Foote - there is no proof the wife of Abraham Newell is their daughter Francis, although Abraham did settle next Joshua Foote in Roxbury. There is no similarity of family names, no other land or will records etc to show a connection. If you have such a source, it would be wonderful to discover the rest of the life of Francis Foote.
