Biography

Name

Elizabeth Unknown[1][2][3][4][5]
Elizabeth Holcombe (married Thomas Holcombe)[1][2][6]
Elizabeth Eno (married James Eno)[1][7][8]

Birth

about 1617, England[1]
Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Holcombe of Windsor, Conn., was born circa 1617 likely in England of unknown parents. In 1669 at Windsor as Elizabeth Eno, (her second husband was James Eno), John Winthrop, Jr. treated her and stated she was then 52 years old. Elizabeth died (record at Windsor, Conn.) on Oct. 7, 1679, her age not stated in the record.[1]

Death

7 OCT 1679 Simsbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut[1] [Great Migration Begins: "Windsor or Simsbury"] [2][9][10]
James Eno owned large tracts of land which included areas of Simsbury, however Anderson states that they lived in Windsor. George McCracken is certain she died in Simsbury. Her grandchildren were born in Simsbury, year after year. Was Elizabeth attending the birth of a grandchild in Simsbury when she died? It would be nice if McCracken and Anderson would tell us -- why Simsbury?

Burial

Windsor, Connecticut[7][2]

Wife: Elizabeth UNKNOWN This profile was merged into Elizabeth Ferguson. Was there a G2G discussion before hand?
Elizabeth purportedly married her first husband at Dorchester, Mass. on May 14, 1634. However, there is no record of such a marriage and the date cited is the date Thomas Holcombe was made a freeman of the Mass. Bay Colony. Thus, Elizabeth m. 1) Thomas Holcombe at an unknown place on an unknown date, probably before 1634, since they had a child born that year. There were ten children of the marriage before Thomas died intestate at Windsor, Conn. on Sept. 7, 1657.
The first two known children of Thomas Holcombe and wife Elizabeth, were born at Dorchester, Massachusetts, and the other known seven were born at Windsor, Connecticut.

There were two intermarriages between the Holcombe and Eno family in the next generations: (1) Sgt. Research Notes

Disputed parents

Elizabeth's parents are Unknown. Her last name at birth was not Ferguson as claimed by prior writers, since as noted by Donald Lines Jacobus in 1964 that "[h]er maiden name has been stated as Ferguson, without proof or probability.")[1]
Anderson in: the Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to N.E. 1620-1633, Vols. I-III, NEHGS Boston, 1995p. 966, just lists her as Elizabeth ___, born about 1617; she married second, James Eno as his third wife.
TAG: Vol 57: 1981: p. 66: "the common statement that his wife Elizabeth's name was Ferguson, is highly improbably and completely undocumented." (Quoting George E. McCrracken, F.A.S.G., F.G.S.P.)
The above is also stated in TAG. Vol. 58: 1982 p. 125 and again in TAG: Vol. 60:1984 : p. 185, the last stating Torrey erroneously included her name as Ferguson in New England Marriages.

Birth and Marriage Dates

No records have been identified for Elizabeth's birth date or birth place or parents. The first child for Thomas and Elizabeth Holcomb was born about 1634, probably at Dorchester, Massachusetts. "14 May 1634...such a marriage is not on record, and the date is that on which Holcombe was admitted to freemanship".[11]

Disputed Name

Elizabeth Ferguson[2][9]
Sources: "collection of records was extracted from a variety of sources including family group sheets, pedigree charts... etc." i.e. no primary or secondary sources support the name Ferguson. Parents established as "Unknown".

The CLN was changed to Ferguson on this profile, no additional sources added. Will someone please review? Thanks.
Corrected CLN and sent a private message to the person who made the change explaining proper use of data fields and policy re: unsourced LNAB

Brad, shouldn't the CLN be Eno rather than Holcombe? James/Jaques Eno was her second husband.

oops you are right, I missed that.

Ferguson-10314 and Unknown-376666 appear to represent the same person because: I created this Ferguson profile by mistake, before I found the project profile. So she should be merged into the Unknown, per sources on the project profile. The name Ferugson has been discounted, and her parents are not known. Thanks!

UNKNOWN-101719 and Unknown-376666 appear to represent the same person because: same husband and son

Ferguson-2960 and Unknown-376666 appear to represent the same person because: Elizabeth's last name at birth is unknown, according to GMB (Anderson) and other professional genealogists -- please see new sources and footnotes on Ferguson-2960. Also please comment on the question at the G2G Forum on this -- see link on Ferguson-2960. If completing the merge, please note that the marriage date is disproven, it is about 1634, and Anderson says they lived at Windsor and that she died at Windsor or at Simsbury, please consider Windsor. Her birth date is unknown, "about 1617" according to Anderson. Please read the revised/edited profile before doing the merge. Thank you, April Dauenhauer
Because the latest iteration of Thomas Holcombe's id in his profile is spelled with an "e" at the end -- and because that is how Anderson spells it in Great Migration Begins -- I have made the spelling the same consistently throughout the text of the profile.
I spent all day combining the texts from merged sources. That is because I kept uncovering:

a. footnotes that contradicted the fact they were supposed to support

b. multiple footnotes for sources that rely on trees, family group sheets and other undocumented data not closely connected to the event it is supposed to support

c. disputes over the Elizabeth LNAB, date of birth, location of birth, parents, location of death and location of burial.

I have never seen so much contradiction in a single profile, and credit the aforementioned unreliable sources.

Great Migration Begins is named as the primary source for ancestors who immigrated between 1620 and 1640 because it cites primary sources (when available) and explains discrepancies.

Was the change from Elizabeth Unknown to Elizabeth Ferguson put as a question in G2G before the merged profiles were changed? If not, why not? I can't see any primary or even secondary evidence for her last name.

I find this very disturbing.

Ferguson-2960 and Ferguson-5447 appear to represent the same person because: Obvious match. Please note, Elizabeth was not born in Connecticut.
