Research Notes

In his 1938 book, Utterback history and genealogy of the Utterback family in America, 1622-1937, William Irvin Utterback incorrectly places multiple descendants of Johannes Otterbach (b. 1659 who married Margarethe Dornsieffer), under Johann Hermann Otterbach, [1] in his determination to have Hermann as the single "fountain head" from whom all American Utterbacks descended - thru two of Hermann's sons: John Philip (b. 1692) (of this profile) and John (b. 1702). [2]

In the "Utterback Book", page 35, it lists this John Philip's family this way: [3]

"4. John Philip2 Utterback, (Johann Philipp Otterbach) (Herman1): b. March 22, 1692, on Tuesday, 7 o'clock P. M.; bapt. on Easter Festival, 1692, with Sponsor, John Philip Heite, driver in iron mines at Seelbach Germany; d. in Germantown, Prince William Co., Va.; m. _______
Issue:
  • 17. Henry Utterback, b. 1717; m. Anna _______
  • 18. John Henry Utterback, b. 1721; m. Frances ("Frankie").

Benjamin Clark Holtzclaw corrected these mistakes in his 1964 book Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750, [4] showing that these Utterbacks in Virginia came from a different son of Johannes, Johann Henrich Otterbach (b. 1698), and a grandson, also named Johann Henrich Otterbach (b. 1714). In this uncle-nephew team that were in the 1734 Little Fork, Virginia group, the uncle is known as Henry "the elder" and the nephew as Henry "the younger". [5]

Holtzclaw's book, and the Germanna Foundation database, list John Henry (#18 above) as this John Philip Utterback's only son. [4] [6] The Henry Utterback listed above (#17, who married Anna (?)) was shown in these sources to actually have been born in 1714 and was the son of Johannes Otterbach born in 1680. [4]

"The complete silence of the Virginia records on Harman Utterback and his sons, John Philip and John, would seem to indicate that, like Philip Fishback, they all died early at Germanna, and the sons left no heirs. This would not affect the question so much, if we did not have the records fairly clearly on the two Henry Utterbacks who came over in 1734."
"Of the four grandsons of Harman Utterback listed in the genealogy, then, (Henry No. 17 and John Henry No. 18, sons of John Philip Utterback, and Harman No. 28 and Henry No. 29, sons of John Utterback) only the two Henrys are definitely shown in the documents, while the records seem to be silent about John Henry No. 18 and Harmon No. 28 as about their supposed fathers, John Philip and John Utterback.
"If the above is the case, it seems that Professor Utterback was acting on an erroneous hypothesis, though a reasonable one at the time, in trying to trace all the documented Utterbacks of the fourth generation back to Harmon Utterback. Most of the fourth generation men of the genealogy were sons of the 1734 immigrants, Henry b. 1698 and Henry b. 1714, the former of Fauquier Co. and the latter of Culpeper Co." [4] [7]

So, according to the research by B.C Holtzclaw, instead of the lineages outlined in the W.I. Utterback book:

#17 Henry Utterback (#4 John Philip, #1 Herman),
b. 1717; m. Anna ?
is really    Henry Utterback "the younger" (Johannes b. 1680, Johannes b. 1659, Johannes b. 1622),
b. 1714; m. Anna ?

This profile follows the information in the 1964 Holzclaw source.

Biography

John Utterback has German Roots.

John Philip Utterback was born Johann Philipp Otterbach on 22 Mar 1692 in Nassau-Siegen, Germany to Johann Hermann Otterbach and Elsbeth Heimbach and christened 28 Mar 1692 at St. Nicholas Reform Church in Siegen, Germany. [3] [8] [9] [10] (Note: From one source, John Philip was born in Siegen, but all the other children of Hermann and Elsbeth were born in Trupbach.) [11]

John Phillip migrated with his parents and siblings to the Germanna Colony in Virginia in 1714. [12]

John Philip's wife is unknown and, even though B.C. Holtzclaw felt John Philip really had no heirs, his only child listed in the Germanna Foundation database is: [4] [6]

  1. John Henry Utterback, b. 1721; m. Frances ("Frankie") _______.

Death

Neither W.I Utterback's book nor the Germanna Foundation database give a date of death for John Philip, only that he died in Germantown, Prince William (now Fauquier) Co., Virginia. [3] [6] However, if he really did have a son, John Henry, born in 1721, his death would have been after that date.

Otterbach-29 and Utterback-407 appear to represent the same person because: Different LNAB but PM has declared they are the same and dates match
