Biography

This profile is part of the Utterback Name Study.
Henry Otterbach has German Roots.

Henry Utterback was born Johann Henrich Otterbach on 21 Sep 1698 in Trupbach, Nassau-Siegen, Germany [1] to Johannes Otterbach and Margarethe Dornsieffer. He was christened 25 Sep 1698 in Evangelisch, Siegen, Westfalen, Prussia. [2] He immigrated 23 Sep 1734 to Philadelphia, PA on the ship Hope Galley (Daniel Riedt/Reid/Reed, commander) with his sister Maria Clara Noeh and her family, and his nephew Johann Henrich Otterbach. [3] [4] [5] He went by Henry Utterback from that time on. (Note: Henry's age "30" recorded at entry to America must have been given or copied incorrectly, and should have been 36.) [5]

He is the uncle of the uncle-nephew team from whom all the Virginia Utterbacks seem to be descended, also called Henry "the elder". [1] His nephew was known as Henry "the younger". They were all part of those immigrants who settled across the River from Germantown in the forks of the Rappahannock and Hazel Rivers, which became known as the Little Fork Group. This land was located in present day Culpeper County and was purchased for speculation purposes and to encourage other Siegerländers to come to Virginia and purchase this land from their kinsmen. [6]

Henry married Agnes Brumback/Brumbach about 1735 in Virginia. [7] [8] Their children (according to the Holtzclaw book, with the numbers used in the Utterback book) were: [1]

  1. (#49) Henry Utterback Jr., b. ca. 1737 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, d. 1805 in Shelby County, Kentucky. He married Patsy Huffman/Hoffman in 1792 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA.
  2. (#30) John Utterback, b. ca. 1740 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, d. after 1833 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He married Anna Catherine (--?--) circa 1764 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA.
  3. (#45) Jacob Utterback, b. 3 Aug 1743 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, d. 21 Jan 1827 in Woodford County, Kentucky, USA. He married 1) Ann Elizabeth Martin. He 2) married Quency Hanks circa 1829 in Kentucky, USA.
  4. (#32) Harman Utterback, b. in 1746 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, d. in 1826 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He 1) married Elizabeth Crump in 1769 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA. He 2) married Margaret Strumatt in 1796 in Fauquier County, Virginia.
  5. (#47) Benjamin Utterback, b. 17 Jan 1754 in Germantown, Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, d. Mar 1842 in Morgan County, Indiana. He married Elizabeth Snelling on 15 Nov 1780 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA.
  6. (#50) Peyton Utterback, b. ca. 1760. (?) Note: Holtzclaw found no evidence of this person, but he is listed in the Germanna Foundation database. [9]
  7. (#51) Charles Utterback, b. 8 May 1769 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA, d. 14 Feb 1843 in Anderson County, Kentucky. He married Jemima Nelson on 7 Sep 1789 in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA.

According to Holtzclaw, Henry could have died prior to 1770 (because his son, Henry, made several land purchases in 1772 and 1777 (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 60)), almost certainly died before 1782, the first year of the personal tax lists, for in that year Agnes Utterback is shown with one tithable, namely, her youngest son, Charles, while her eldest son, Henry, was an independent tithable. [1] [10]

Research Notes

The lineage of the Johann Henrich ("Henry") Utterback (originally spelled Otterbach) that married Agnes Brumbach/Brumback ca. 1735 differs between the 1938 book by William Irvin Utterback and the 1964 book by Benjamin Clark Holtzclaw.

William I. Utterback's book "The Utterback Family, 1620-1938" stated, without evidence, that this Henry Utterback (#29 in the book) was born in old Germantown, Virginia ca. 1725, [11] the son of John Utterback/Otterbach (#9), who was born 15 Apr 1702: [11] [12]

"9. John2 Utterback, (Johannes Otterbach) (Herman1): b. April 15, 1702 at Trupbach, near Siegen, Germany; d. at Germantown, Va., after 1772; m. _______
Issue:
  • 28. Harmon Utterback, b. 1724; m. _______
  • 29. Henry Utterback, b. 1725; m. Agnes Brumback."
"29. Henry3 Utterback, (John2, Herman1): b. abt. 1725 in old Germantown, Prince William Co., Va.; had his home on a part of the original grant of land made by Lord Fairfax to the German Colonists of 1720 as determined from a court record now on file in the Clerk's Office of Prince William Co., Va., in Deed Book I, p. 156, under date of July 28,1746; m. 1735 to Agnes Brumback, dau. of Melchior and Elizabeth Brumback, and sister of Mrs. Stephen Hatzenbiller, Maria Gertraudt (Brumback) Neuschwanger, and Mrs. Christopher Wingle as shown in that old 1746 deed granted "for natural love and affection"; she b. 1720 in Prince William Co.; d. in Germantown, Fauquier Co., Va.
Issue:
  • 49. Henry Utterback, b. abt. 1758; m. Patsy Huffman.
  • 50. Peyton Utterback, I, b. abt. 1760; m ?; as determined from old Tax Lists; n. f. r.
  • 51. Charles Utterback, b. 1769; m. Jemima Nelson."

B.C. Holtzclaw's 1964 "Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia" offers the following corrections and is the basis for the information used in this profile: [1] [10]

"Professor William I. Utterback, Marshall College, Huntington, W. Va., published in 1938 "The Utterback Family, 1620-1938" an excellent genealogy of the Utterback family. However, there seems to me to be some need for corrections in his account of the first four generations of the family. He traced all the Virginia Utterbacks back to Harman Utterback, the 1714 immigrant, through his sons John Philip and John, while it seems to me that the evidence we have shows that they were all descended from Harman Utterback's nephew and great-nephew, the two Henry Utterbacks who came over in 1734."
"Henry Utterbach of Fauquier Co., Va. or Johann Henrich Otterbach, b. Sept. 21, 1698 at Trupbach, son of Johannes and Margarethe (Dornsieffer) Otterbach, seems to be the Henry Utterback who soon after his arrival in Virginia in 1734 married Agnes, daughter of Melchior and Elizabeth Brumback of the 1714 colony, and settled at Germantown on the Brumback land, which was deeded to him and his wife Agnes by the other Brumback heirs in 1746 (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 60). Agnes (Brumback) Utterback was probably b. ca. 1720, much younger than her husband, and d. in Fauquier Co., Va. some time between 1790, when she deeded the Germantown land to her youngest son, Charles Utterback, and 1804, when Charles and his eldest brother, Henry Utterback,, deeded away the same land (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 61). Henry Utterback (Sr.) was excused from levies in Fauquier Co. June 24, 1762, an indication of the fat that he was probably around 60 years of age, when men were frequently excused from taxes. This fits with the hypothesis that he was the Johann Henrich Otterbach born in 1698. I think that he probably died prior to 1770, when the Henry Utterback charged with the 100 acres at Germantown was probably his eldest son, Henry. It is more certain that the 200 acres charged to Henry Utterback in 1777 was the son, for the latter had purchased an additional 100 acres at Germantown in 1772 (Germanna Record No. 2, p. 60). It is quite certain that Henry, Sr. was dead by 1782, the first year of the personal tax lists, for in that year Agnes Utterback is shown with 1 tithable, namely, her youngest son, Charles, while her eldest son, Henry, was an independent tithable. "
"The evidence I have indicates that the following men, all of whom were definitely identified with Fauquier Co., were sons of Henry Utterback (b. 1698) and his wife Agnes Brumback: Henry No. 49, John No. 30, Jacob No. 45, Harman No. 32, Benjamin No. 47, and Charles No. 51, in the very probable order of their births."
"I can find no documentary reference to Joel Utterback No. 46 nor to Peyton Utterback No. 50."

So, according to the research by B.C Holtzclaw, instead of the lineage outlined in the W.I. Utterback book:

#29 Henry Utterback
(#9 John, #1 Herman),
b. 1725; m. Agnes Brumbach
is really    Henry Utterback "the elder"
(Johannes b. 1659, Johannes b. 1622),
b. 1698; m. Agnes Brumbach

Utterback - Otterbach-1 and Otterbach-40 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same wife and child. The dates of this profile are off because the new profile is based on the erroneous W.I. Utterback book - please read the Research Notes in Otterbach-40 - but they represent the same person.

I will suggest that the "research notes" at the beginning be condensed. There seems to be too much information for what might better be titled a "Disputed Parents" section.

I'm not sure about this. Most of it seems relevant. It does not belong at the top of the profile though, so I've moved it down below the biography.

erhaps a scrollbox (including the whole long explanation) underneath a quick summary in a "Disputed Parents" section at the very top, per WikITree procedure?
posted by [Living Schmeeckle]
If I understand what you are talking about, the "scroll box" is not recommended in the style guide for WikiTree profiles.

If a text like this gets too long, it could be placed into a space page with a link. But I don't really find this research note that excessive.

Utterback-333 and Otterbach-40 do not represent the same person because: These appear to be different people after reviewing the bio.

Utterback-232 and Otterbach-40 appear to represent the same person because: Differences in source materials of the 1938 W.I. Utterback book and the 1964 B.C. Holtzclaw book make it look like these profiles are 2 different people, but they are supposed to be the same husband of Agnes Brumbach. W.I.Utterback placed him under a different father and has him born later in VA, when in reality (per Holtzclaw) he was born earlier in Germany to Johannes Otterbach b. 1659. See Otterbach-40 in the Research Notes for the details/sources. LNAB should be Otterbach. Most changed names to Utterback after immigrating to US (VA).

Utterback-130 and Otterbach-40 appear to represent the same person because: Otterbach is the correct spelling for the LNAB (last name at birth). Henry (Heinrich) was born in Germany, per Holtzclaw's 1964 compendium (see link on the profile of Utterback-130)
