Biography

RICHARD VANCE was born about the year 1792 in Russell County, Virginia.

A biographical account of Richard written by H. C. Ragland states that Richard married a Miss Sutherland. Circumstantial evidence suggests a daughter named Rhoda was born from this union, after which we must assume Richard's first wife passed away.

On March 25, 1813, he married Mary Ann Simms in Floyd County, Kentucky. The marriage, if deemed legitimate, was solemnized by the infamous Rev. Matthew Spurlock. Claiming to be a Methodist minister, Rev. Spurlock's credentials were heavily scrutinized, as he was said to be of lowly character, along with being a counterfeiter, a fraud, and an adulterer consorting with drunks and women of ill repute. Legal or not, no further marriage record for Richard and Mary Ann as man and wife has been found yet they lived together faithfully as such.

On July 8, 1825, both Richard "Vants" and Rhody "Vants" served as chainbearers for George M. Pinnell, Deputy Surveyor for Francis R. Pinnell, who surveyed a tract of 84 acres of land on Crawley Creek for Thomas W. Brown. Rhoda, being Richard's eldest child, would have been just 14 years old when she assisted him. The survey for Thomas Brown is noted as bordering Richard Vance's improvement.[1]

On March 9, 1836, Richard and his son Wesley Vance assisted Crispin S. Stone, assistant for John Lawson, as Stone surveyed a tract of 38 acres for Jeremiah Farmer located on the Cane Patch Fork of Twelvepole Creek.[2] The following day, Richard and Wesley assisted again as Stone surveyed a tract of 50 acres on Cane Patch Fork for Samuel Damron.[3]
