Biography

WILLIAM VAUGHAN of Charles City County wrote his Last Will and Testament on 24 March 1692 leaving a legacy to his son, JOHN. The legacy was noted as:

"land I am now possessed with to be equally divided amongst my seven sonns, WILLIAM, RICHARD, JOHN, SAMUEL, DANIEL, JAMES and NICHOLAS VAUGHAN and each to have his part next and adjoyning to the plantation they are seated on..."[1] The will was recorded 4 June 1694 in Charles City County.

Prince George County was created from Charles City County in 1703.

The 1704 Prince George County Quit Rent Rolls recorded Jno' Vaughan, 169 acres; Sam'l Vaughan, 169 acres; Dan'l Vaughan, 169 acres; James Vaughan, 169 acres; Rich'd Vaughan, 309 acres; Wm. Vaughan, 309 acres; and Nich'o Vaughan, 169 acres. Note: The 169 acres was 1/7 of the land owned by William Vaughan at his death. William Vaughan and Richard were jointly patented 281 acres bringing their total acreage to 309 acres.[2]

The court records of Prince George County, Virginia recorded a suit in chancery cited as JOHN and SAMUEL VAUGHAN vs JOHN SEVEAR. At a Court held for Prince George County 13 September 1715 concerning the suit, it was noted:

"In suit between JOHN and SAM'l VAUGHAN and JAMES SEVEAR who intermarryed with SARAH VAUGHAN, Executrix of Wm. VAUGHAN dec'd, deft says he has paid debts agst estate of 5839 lbs tob. Plts. charge deft. with 3628 lbs tob. owed, which he denies. They are to bring evidence to court."[3]

14 Apr 1719. James Vaughan late of Bristol Parish, Prince George County sold to Cornelius Fox 169 acres called the Boyling Spring for 25£. Witnessed by Edward Prince and Joseph Simmons. Description: Adjacent Richard Vaughan, Daniel Vaughan, John Vaughan and William Vaughan. His wife Ann Vaughan released her dower rights. [4]

The Vestry Book and Register of Bristol Parish, Virginia recorded a child of JOHN and ELINOR VAUGHAN as:

  • ABIGAELL dau: of JOHN & ELINOR VAUGHAN departed this life feb: 23th 1720-1 in the 6th year of her Age.[5]

30 May 1725. John Vaughan being aged and sick was relieved of levy. [6]

Note: This John is likely the son of William as he was aged and sick in 1725.

Research Notes

There is no evidence that John Vaughan of Charles City Co. is one and the same as John Vaughan of New Kent County. That calls into question all references to New Kent County and the marriage to Sarah Poindexter. John Vaughan of New Kent County died in 1724, while John Vaughan of Prince George County appears in the Bristol Parish Vestry in 1725.
