There is a growing consensus of opinion among Venter researchers that Hendrik Venter was from Hamel in France and not Hamel(i)n in Germany, and the available evidence is heavily weighted in favor of this conclusion. In all the records in which he is named at the Cape, most specifically his two marriage records, he is recorded as from Hamel. Previously it was widely accepted that he came from Hamel(i)n in Germany, and that he was originally known as Heinrich von Dempter, a conclusion that [3]not supported by the record. Please visit the Venter website (see footnotes) for indepth information and interpretation. [8]
