it is often claimed in various family trees -- and was previously claimed in a different profile on WikiTree -- that Sarah, daughter of John and Anna Knight, was the wife of Benjamin Waterman; this claim presumably dates from the confusing statement in Clarence Almon Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 that Benjamin wed either a "?Sarah KNIGHT" or a "Mary/Mercy WILLIAMS".[1] Renowned genealogist Andrews Moriarty corrected Torrey in a 1933 article for the New England Historical and Genealogical Register[2]; it's behind the NEHGS paywall but the exact entry, in Moriarty's list of the children of John and Ann[a] Knight (top of p. 268) reads thus:
"iv. SARAH (probably daughter of John2 Knight), b. about 1685; m. at Norwich, 2 Feb. 1707/8, ENOS RANDALL of Colchester, Conn."
In fact, the name of Benjamin Waterman's wife is uncertain, and on WikiTree she is correctly shown as Unknown (Unknown) Waterman.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Benjamin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Benjamin:
The profile for Benjamin's spouse, Unknown-552667, has at long last been merged with the (formerly competing) profile Sarah Knight -- correctly retaining the "Unknown Unknown" status.
I propose to rework the Sources for this profile of Benjamin, as the Ancestry links -- as is far too common -- no longer function, even for those of us with paid Ancestry subscriptions. It may take me a little while to replace the key sources with accurate duplicates or substitutes that have working links. But I'm a direct descendant and I will get to it.
Torrey's other option for a spouse, Mercy Williams, is said in "The Waterman Family" Vol. 3 to have been a daughter of Joseph Williams. If this is Joseph, son of Roger Williams, he has a dau. _Mary_ (may be interchangeable w. Mercy), b. 1676; but her WT profile Williams-4983 shows her m. to Obediah Brown. If Joseph is Joseph, Jr., grandson of Roger, his dau. Mercy (b. abt. 1700) is WT Williams-905, but her WT profile shows her m. to Wm. Randall in 1720. So unless the m. of Mary to Obediah is wrong, it's challenging to accept either of Torrey's proposed candidates as spouse for Benjamin. (Key sources of this profile seem to be ancestry trees, which are not helpful.)
Benjamin Waterman, listed in the bio as having married Mercy Knight in 1764, is most likely the grandson of this Benjamin Waterman. See this headstone for him: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/18536139
Benjamin Waterman III is listed as having been married to Mercy Knight first, then Sarah Sheldon, then Waite Gorton. This needs further research and investigation. There is a profile for Mercy Knight Waterman at Knight-10514 but the location of the marriage there is Cranston, not Johnston.
Moriarty, in a footnote in NEHGR 87 (see https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/new-england-historical-and-genealogical-register/image?pageName=266&volumeId=11739&rId=23540841 ), states that at the time, "there was no other Knight family in Rhode Island but that of Richard". The one Sarah Knight descending from Richard in the relevant time period (b. 1685), "probably" a dau. of Richard's son John, is shown in that article as m. to Enos Randall of CT in Feb. 1707/8. Torrey's unclear entry in "New England Marriages" has Benjamin marrying either a Sarah Knight, or a Mercy Williams; if Moriarty is correct, it's challenging to figure out where an available Sarah came from. Despite Torrey, Benjamin's wife very likely should be Unknown Unknown.
