Thanks for showing Scotland as one of your interests. If you haven’t yet done so, you are welcome to join the Scotland project via the G-2-G topic. The Project runs the Tartan Trail which encourages those new(er) to Scottish research to get to grips with Scottish sources. There is a wee bit of a wait as each person “hiking the trail” is allocated a mentor to assist and encourage them.

I hope you get a great deal of pleasure collaborating with colleagues in this great project. If you have any questions or wish any advice either send me a private message or email me.

Hi John!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are usually shared by many descendants, collaborating with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus, whether time period, location, or topic. Review the project pages to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Can't find what you're looking for? Let me know, and I can make some suggestions! :-)

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi John

As you have been a member of WikiTree for a few weeks now I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.

Has the New Member How-To been helpful or left you with any questions?

I am here to help with any problems or queries you may have. To contact me, be sure to use the "reply" link for this comment so that I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page.

Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

Karen ~ WikiTree Messenger

Welcome to WikiTree, John. This is a courtesy email to share our How-to pages for some quick tips on working with both the Wiki pages and our other members. There is some great information in those pages. Were you able to determine whether the profile Karen linked (Alger-236) was your original profile? If so, we can help get them merged; just let us know.

Kathy got you started. If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, let us know by using the "reply" link under our comments or by clicking our names to visit our profiles. From there you can leave a comment or send a private message.

It's been a long time since I've been on Wikitree. (I wasn't recognized.) I am getting a GEDcom from Ancestry I want to upload.

Hi John,

I think this might be your previous profile John Alger, if it is you will need to send a message to [email address removed] and ask them to merge both of the profiles together, as they are both active one will need to be deactivated first.

When you have uploaded your GEDCOM, one of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Any problems please let me know

Take care Karen

Hi ,

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful. Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies. If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles. Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations. If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page. _____ Matt~ WikiTree Mentor

Hi !

Welcome to WikiTree :) I hope you have a wonderful experience here on our site. We're great for making “cousin” connections! Happy researching!

Eowyn ~ WikiTree Team

So far I can't complain about any non-response on Wikitree. After all, I've only been on it for two days. However I have had bad experience on another on-line collaborative tree where my tree was hi-jacked by non-responsive jerks who entered every piece of internet litter they found. They didn't even check for logical consistency such when a children born while the father was a child himself (wrong father, in that case). I am hoping to make contact with distant cousins through this process and borrow their research where mine is in doubt. I do hope people are more responsive and helpful here. But I still will not link to erroneous profiles, so, do I create an more accurate duplicate profile or have to truncate my tree at that point?

Hello John how recently have you submitted the discrepencies they may of not gotten around to making the changes or allowing you permission to make changes yet. They may of gotten mixed up due to name similaties when they did the initial research. We have a few where they had the same name for two siblings

Hi!

How are ya? I'm _Matt____, a WikiTree Mentor. Hope you're enjoying our site. Our primary vision is to build a collaborative tree with just one profile per person, so please make sure to look for duplicates on WikiTree before adding a profile. Having dates and locations attached to every person assists in our mission as well! Feel free to check out How To Use WikiTree. It's a great step-by-step guide to get you started. We also have our Help Index with links to topics you may have questions on. Don't forget our G2G Forum where many of our generous members help each other out. And of course I'm here to help, just ask!

Hi again John. Thank you for volunteering to help grow our World Wide Family Tree.

You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add any Profiles to WikiTree. Everything on WikiTree is a collaborative work in progress so don’t forget to read and sign our Honor Code. This is what keeps WikiTree a friendly and helpful community. We have many friendly members, feel free to ask if you have any questions.

I began looking into my family history about 1999-2000. At the time I knew each of my grandparents but almost nothing else on my father's side. I grew up with my mother's family around me so I had heard at least a bit of family lore and stories but the names and relationships were a jumble in my head. I have since traced nearly every ancestor back to the Revolution and many back to the 1500's. I am currently embarked on finding cousins, however distant, as well as the few dead ends remaining. Now that I am about to retire I should have the time to better document and confirm my earlier findings.
