Notes

Note H4Best known as Helen, she taught school for 18 years in North Lawrence and Burton City, and 10 years in Smithville. Her studies included attendance at the Smithville Normal College in 1883, a college just across the the street from her home on North Milton St. (Tuition was .50 per year for preparatory studies or for collegiate level.) She was a teacher of Ladies Bible Class for 38 years and charter member of Wayne Twp. Housekeepers Club. Helen was baptized with the Smithville Church of God but transferred her membership in 1876 (the year she began teaching) to St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Smithville during the pastorate of Rev. S. P. Keiffer. After her marriage, she joined the Zion Lutheran Church in Wooster.
Helen taught school in Green and Baughman townships from 1876 to 1895. She was a charter member of the Wayne Township Housekeepers Club.
In 1938, a reunion of the Smithville Grammer School class of 1889 was held in Helen's honor at the Smithville Inn (then known throughout the region for its chicken dinners). "All former pupils of Smithville and vicinity were invited, especially those who studied McGuffey's Readers, the Eclectic Spelling Book, Ray's Arithmetric, Van Antwerp Bragg's Geography, Harvey's Grammer, and all who went to school to Helen Webner Davidson, Maud Shamp, Carrie Yoder, Supt. James L. Zaring, and other teachers of the 80's and 90's and subsequently, were cordially invited." Included in a picture of the class is Charles Clyde Webner, Gil Webner's oldest son.
In 2013, Helen Davidson's Bible was found which included this poem by W. O. Walton. His purpose in writing it is unknown.
"Sweet spirit, gently lead them through,
However rough the way may be.
And give them grace to keep in view
Even thy gifts that are so free.
My friends, I trust you’re on the way
Leading to the perfect peace above.
United, ever watch and pray,
Even until the Judgment Day;
Each then will rest in perfect love.
No sickness, no sorrow shall enter that rest.
Loved ones you’ll meet in the home of the blest.
Dark clouds may come, and storms may arise;
Afflictions and sorrows our faith often tries;
Very near to the Savior then we must abide;
In Him we can trust and be well-satisfied.
Dangers and troubles will all soon be past;
Sweetly we’ll meet in that haven at last
Oh! What a joy with each other to share,
No more to part, when we meet over there.
Gnadenhutten, Ohio, Sept. 28, 1899"
