Note: John's mother is often mistakenly called "Elizabeth Curtis," but Anderson, Jacobus, and Lemuel Welles all agree that John Welles, Sr's only marriage was to Elizabeth Bourne.[2][3][4]
Marriage
John married c. 1669 to Mary Hollister.[1] According to Marjorie McNulty, published in Connecticut Nutmegger in 1971, this John Welles was a son of Gov. Thomas Welles of Wethersfield.[5] This is incorrect; John was the grandson of Gov. Welles of Connecticut (Case p 35).[1]
Mary and John lived at Stratford, Connecticut and had eight children.[1][6]
