Biography

Note: John's mother is often mistakenly called "Elizabeth Curtis," but Anderson, Jacobus, and Lemuel Welles all agree that John Welles, Sr's only marriage was to Elizabeth Bourne.[2][3][4]

Marriage

John married c. 1669 to Mary Hollister.[1] According to Marjorie McNulty, published in Connecticut Nutmegger in 1971, this John Welles was a son of Gov. Thomas Welles of Wethersfield.[5] This is incorrect; John was the grandson of Gov. Welles of Connecticut (Case p 35).[1]

Mary and John lived at Stratford, Connecticut and had eight children.[1][6]

  1. Mary Welles, b Nov 29, 1670
  2. Thomas Welles, b c. 1672; perhaps m Aug 31, 1710 to Sarah Styles
  3. Sarah Welles, b Jan 2, 1673/4
  4. John Welles, b c. 1675-6; m Mary Judson
  5. Comfort Welles, b  ; m Abel Birdsey
  6. Joseph Welles, b June 21, 1679; m Sarah Preston
  7. Elizabeth Welles, b  ; m July 5, 1711 to Joseph Curtis, Jr
  8. Robert Welles, b Sept 1688; m Eunice Curtis

Property and Positions

John Wells of Stratford was propounded for freeman on Oct. 12, 1671.[citation needed] On July 9, 1675, Captain Wells was appointed by the General Court in Hartford to be part of a standing council that "shall have as full powers as the Charter will allow, to consult, conclude and act all matters and things emergent..."[citation needed]

Death and Legacy

John died 24 March 1713/4 at Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut.[1][6](Note: in another handwriting, was added "Mar 14" beside husband John's death record)[6] His estate in 1669 was listed as 71 pounds, 5 shillings and 0 pence.[citation needed]

Previously had birth and death location of Nazing, Essex, England, without evidence or citation.

Welles-457 and Wells-12370 appear to represent the same person because: Climbing up family tree from Joseph to John. I was following the other spelling of last name so I did not see your profile at first.

John Welles married Elizabeth Bourne, (not Elizabeth Curtis). Please see references by Anderson, Jacobus, and Lemuel Welles. Thanks!
