Biography

Walter Wilkins was born in Gosty or Goster Leys (now known as Gorsey Lees) Overseal, Leicestershire on 21 Feb 1872, 5th of the 7 children of Henry Wilkins & Eliza Findley .[1] [2] He was baptised in St Matthew's Church, Overseal, on 21 April 1872[3] [4] [5] (although FamilySearch and Ancestry both suggest 15 Dec 1879.)[6]

Walter lived in Overseal all of his life, working as a clerk at one of the local coal mines.[7][8][9]

The censuses of 1881 and 1891 show Walter living with his parents and siblings. [10][11] First as an 8 year old scholar and then as a "Farmer's son." Several of his older brothers worked on the farm, and the younger boys and the sisters worked in the post office. (Thier father was listed as "Post Master and Farmer" and appears in the trade direcories as such.)

Walter married Jane Waterson (known as in her early life as Minnie) at the Baptist Chapel in the nearby town of Ashby de la Zouch on 26 December 1898.[12][13] They had two children Elizabeth Millicent Wilkins (known as Lizzie)[14][15] and Ernest Henry Wilkins (known as Ern).[16][17]

In 1901 Walter and Jane lived in Moore Street[18] with their baby daughter. [19] By 1911 the family had moved to Woodville Road and had been joined by their son.[20][21] During this time Walter attended to Baptist Chapel in Overseal, being awarded a book of sacred songs in 1909.[22]

The 1939 Register shows Walter and Jane living on Burton Road, Overseal. He is a Colliery Weighing Machine Clerk and she is a housewife. [23]

After Jane died (in 1942), Walter moved in with his son Ernest and his family.[24]

Walter died at home in Overseal of Myocardial degeneration on 13 May 1946, [25][26] and was buried alongside Jane in St Matthew's Churchyard on 16 May 1946.[27][28] Their son Ernest was laid to rest with them in 1959.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Walter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Walter:

Hi Alison,

I have been poking around your profiles and the Wilkins ONS as I have a connection to you via Thomas Wilkins & Elizabeth Smith.

Just thought you'd like to know the Overseal registers have been microfilmed by FamilySearch and Walter was indeed baptised 21 April 1872: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6GKV-WZ

Cheers, Sarah

Overseal was in Leicestershire until 1897, and has been in Derbyshire since then. It is in the area known locally as Ashby Wo(u)lds.

Does anyone have an original record, or image of one to confirm date of Baptism?
