Biography

Sarah was born in 1770. She died in 1841.

While both the wives of Marston Clay had the surname Williams - they were not related.

Will of Sally (Williams) Clay-Berry

Widow of Marston Clay and Benjamin Berry. Book C, Page 37

I, Sally Berry of the county of Henderson, county of Kentucky of sound Mind . . . . .make this my last will and testament as regards my property -

Firstly - I give to my son A. B. Clay one note held by me on James W. Clay for the sum of $100 which will be due on the15th day of December 1842.

Secondly - I give to my daughter Lucinda Bradshaw one note held by me on James W. Clay for the sum of $100 which will be due on the 15th day of December 1842, also all my clothes.

Thirdly - I give to my son Charles W. Clay one note held by me upon Charles W. Clay for the sum of $150 which is to be given up to him.

Fourthly - I give to my son James W Clay all the balance of my personal property with all moneys and rents which may be due me after paying my just debts with the exception of one beureau (sic) which I give to my granddaughter, Sarah W. Lambert.

The last will of Sally Berry dec'd was produced at the May term 1841 and proved by the oath of John H. Lambert one of the subscribing witnesses thereto. And again, at the present term was further proved by John H. Lambert, who stated in open court that Jemima Cheatham the other witness is since dead. Thereupon said will was ordered to be recorded. Will of Masten Clay. Written 29 Dec 1804. Proved June 1807. Names wife Sarah and 'her' children and refers to them as his daughters and sons: Elizabeth, Thomas, Lucinda, James, Charles & Barnett. Also names sons Maston, Henry M., John M., Samuel and daughter Diannah Coleman. Leaves 100 acres purchased from William B. Smith to wife Sarah. Names 13 slaves: Stephen, Aimy, Phebe, Jane, Susannah, Lewis, Bob, Hannah, Catharine, Pleasant, William, Stewart, and Isaac. Executors: brothers-in-law William Williams and James Williams. Executrix: wife Sarah Clay. Witnesses: Phil Barbour, Geo. Brenkenany, John Rakin.

Purchase Deed, Henderson County, KY, 1808

Henderson County Courthouse, Kentucky. Deed Book, B, p143. 9 Nov 1808. Deed executed between Sarah Clay (buyer) et al. and William B. Smith (seller) for 100 acres, lot no. 45 in Henderson & Co. Grant. Consideration: $300. Original transaction made between Maston Clay, deceased and W.B. Smith. Indenture now extended to Sarah Clay, Maston's widow, who obtained the tract by his will for her natural life, and after her death the tract to be transferred to Elizabeth Rankin, Thomas Clay, Lucinda Clay, James Clay, Charels Clay and Barnet Clay.
