Biography

Elizabeth Wingfield was the daughter of Robert Wingfield, Knt., and Elizabeth Goushill.[1][2][3] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Sir Robert Wingfield, of Letheringham in Suffolk, was M.P. for that county in the reign of Henry VI. Sir Robert was then chief of the great house of Wingfield. His wife, Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Sir Robert Gousell, by the Lady Elizabeth Fitzalan, was sister and co-heir of Thomas, 11th [12th] Earl of Arundel.[4]

Marriage and Children

Elizabeth married before January 1462 William Brandon, Knt., perhaps son of Robert Brandon, Collector of Customs at King's Lynn and Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. William was born about 1425.[1] They had three sons and at least seven daughters, birthdates and birth order are unknown:
  • William, Knt., joined Buckingham's rebellion in 1483, killed at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485, married Elizabeth Bruyn and had issue,[1] including Charles, Duke of Suffolk,[5] brother-in-law to Henry VIII.[4][6] William was his father's main heir.[4]
  • Robert, Knt.,[1] died without issue,[4] married ____ Calthorpe[5]
  • Thomas, K.G.,[4] of Southwark, Surrey, Marshal of the King's Bench, Master of the Horse, also joined Buckingham's rebellion in 1483, married first Annes Fiennes and second to Elizabeth Dinham.[1] He died without issue, his will dated 11 January 1508/9 was proved 11 May 1510.[5]
  • Elizabeth, married first John Candishe (or Cavendish)[4] and second John Leventhorpe[1][5]
  • Anne, wife of Nicholas (or John) Sidney[1][5][4]
  • Margaret, "the elder", married Gregory (or Thomas) Lovell, Knt., of Barton Bendish, Norfolk[1][5] and had issue[4]
  • Eleanor, married John Glemham[4] (his second wife) and had issue; she died 30 June 1480[1][5]
  • Katherine, wife of John Gurney,[1][5] with whom she had three daughters (two were named Elizabeth)[4]
  • Mary, wife of John Redyng/Ryding,[1] not named in her mother's will[5] (not named by Burke)
  • Margaret, the younger (not named by Richardson), named in William's will (1475) but not Elizabeth's (1491).[5] She may have married Hugh Manning, but no evidence has been found.[7] This daughter is not named by Burke.
  • Anne, wife of John (or _____) Loveday, named as a daughter of Elizabeth and William by Richadson and Moriarty;[1] however, Anne Loveday is called a "cousin" of Elizabeth in her Inquisition Post Mortem[8] (on which Moriarty clarified that Anne Loveday was granddaughter, not cousin of Elizabeth).[5] This daughter is also not named by Burke.

William's Wills

Her husband William left two wills. The first will dated 10 June 1475 was proved 13 July 1491. This first will names his wife Elizabeth, sons William, Robert and Thomas, and unmarried daughters, Mary, Anne, Margaret the elder, Margaret the younger, and Katherine.[5] Daughters Eleanor and Elizabeth were likely married at the time he wrote this will and were not mentioned. His wife Elizabeth and Sir Robert Wingfield were designated as executors.[5][9][10] Richardson doesn't mention this will.
William left a second will dated 9 April 1491, proved 17 November 1491, requesting burial at Wangford, Suffolk.[1] His wife Elizabeth and Robert Mosely were to be executors of his will.[5] A nuncupative codicil dated 4 March 1490/1 gives certain lands to his wife Elizabeth and his son Robert. Named in the probate are John Ryding, John Gurney, John Leventhorpe, John Hardy and Hugh John. The second will and codicil were proved 17 November 1491.[5]

Death, Will and IPM

Elizabeth died 28 April 1497, leaving a will dated 1496 and proved 8 May 1497.[1]
Will of Elizabeth Lady Brandon:
My body to be buried as near as may be to the tomb of my late husband Sir William Brandon. I bequeath my manor of Cravens, in Henham, to Sir Robert Brandon, my son, and the heirs male of his body; remainder to Thomas Brandon, my son; remainder to William Brandon, nephew to the said Thomas; remainder to Charles Brandon, brother to the said William; remainder to Ann, sister to the said Charles; remainder to Elizabeth Lenthorp, aunt to the said Ann, my daughter; remainder to Eleanor Glenham, my daughter; remainder to Ann Sidney, my daughter; remainder to Thomas Brandon, my son; remainder to Dame Margaret Lovell, my daughter; remainder to Katherine Gurney, my daughter; remainder to Ann Loveday, my daughter; remainder to Eleanor Sidney, daughter of Anne Sidney; remainder to the right heirs of Sir William Brandon. Proved 8th May, 1497.[11][12]
By writ dated 11 April 1497, Elizabeth's Inquisition Post Mortem was taken 3 November 1497 in Suffolk. Her grandson William (son of her son William), aged 21 and more, was her next heir to the manor of Cravens in Henham, Suffolk.[8]

The Magna Carta Project has identified this profile as being in a trail between Gateway Ancestor Richard Palgrave-4 and Magna Carta Surety Baron Roger Bigod-2. I will soon be adding the project as a co-manager of this profile so we can track this trail. Thanks.
