Biography

Sarah was born about 1840 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. She is the daughter of Willis Womack and Phebe Green.[1] She passed away after 1880 in either Rutherford or Cleveland County, North Carolina and may be buried in Sandy Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Mooresboro, Cleveland County.[2] This is unconfirmed. There is no photograph of a grave marker on the Find A Grave Memorial and there is no source given for date of death/burial. Sarah is last found in records on the 1880 census in the household of her father in Rutherford County.

Sarah married Joseph Bailey on 13 September 1868 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.[3] The marriage ended in divorce.

Sarah separated from her husband about 1878/79. In 1880 she is living in the household of her father, Willis Wamack [Womack], in Colfax, Rutherford County, North Carolina. She is using the surname "Wamack" even though she is listed as married. Also in the household are Sarah's children, all using the surname "Wamack":[4]

  1. Lula Bailey [Wamack], b c 1870
  2. John Bailey [Wamack], b c 1871
  3. Martha Bailey [Wamack], b c 1874
  4. Benjamin Bailey [Wamack], b c 1876
  5. Elizabeth "Bessie" Bailey [Wamack], b c 1879

Sarah is listed as mother along with Joseph "Joe" Bailey as father on the death records of three of their children: John, Benjamin and Elizabeth "Bessie" Bailey (see below).

During the 1870's Joseph appears to have maintained two households. He was not yet divorced from first wife Sarah Womack and they had children born from 1870 to 1879 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. No record of an actual divorce has been found although they were living apart by 1879.

At the same time he had children with Nancy Lequire (Sarah's cousin) who were born from 1874 to 1879 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. Joseph and Nancy left North Carolina about 1879 for Fannin County, Georgia where they were listed on the 1880 Census (dated 1 June 1880) and were married in October 1884.

Name

Please note that Sarah has not yet been found in records using the surname "Bailey." She is always Sarah Womack (Wamack, Womock, etc.). DO NOT add Bailey as her Current Last Name.
