He was born sometime between 1570 and 1580 in England, possibly the son or grandson of a man known as "Father Wood".[1]

There is a record of John Wood being taxed at Roydon in the Lay Subsidy of 21 James I under Harlow Hundred, Essex [PRO 112/613, now under T/A 427 under Essex Archives].[1]
