Biography

It is believed Rebecca was born about 1644 in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony. Her father Nicholas relocated to Oyster Bay, New York Colony in 1653. She died before 1719.^[1] It likely her remains were interred in the Frost Family Cemetery, in Lattingtown, New York (located on the grounds of a private golf course The Creek Club). Her husband William Frost purchased the land for the cemetery about 1670. ^[2]

Highly unusual for the time, Rebecca was granted a divorce from her first husband Eleazer Leverich (m. 1662) on the grounds of his impotency. "Rebecca, who married Eleazer Lev­erich, son of the Rev. William Leverich, from whom, however, the Court of Assize, in 1670, granted a divorce on account of his alleged impotency, after they had been married seven and a half years. This, it is believed, was the first case of divorce by this court. The proceedings are set forth at length in the court records, the last order being made on the 24th February, 1670, when the Court deczeed that “Eleazer Leverich do pay, or cause to be paid unto Rebecca Wright, from whom he is divorced, the sum of 25 pounds, in living cattle, to be apprized by indifferent men, or in corne, beef, or pork, at price cur­rent, in lieu of what she brought to him at their marriage.” ^[3]
