This week has been a great week! I had narrowed Frank William Pate’s father down by researching Pates that arrived in Mississippi in the first decade of 1800. I found evidence of a father named John, his son named James, a William, a Joseph, Sr & Jr. A Thomas, Sr & Jr. All of these signed the petition for Mississippi statehood in 1809! Created some questions that I hope you & Elliott can help answer.
I had previously found a John Pate & son James in Wilkinson county on a tax roll in 1816. Wilkinson county once included area of Amite & Pike counties.
A quick look at William’s timeline: he was a private from 1812-1813 in the war of 1812, received land grants as payment for that service. We have record of his & Elizabeth Garlington’s marriage in May of 1815 in Amite county. After 1815, until his death in 1856 we have multiple records of his presence in Amite/Pike county.
Now he is dated back to 1809, which probably means he arrived in Mississippi as early as 1807?
Several years ago, I ran across family trees that had his father as James Bates & mother as Elizabeth Tubbs Bates. I quickly assumed this was a mistake.
All the people listed above as signers of the petition were Bates!!!
Wednesday I ran across a statement in Jim Peacock’s book that stated that John Pate was in the American Revolution and was a loyalist or a Tory. This might answer why they changed their last names?? Also, This group did not follow the normal migration timeline of other Pates. They appear to have left Lincoln/Jackson county, Ga 1804-1805 & moved to southwest Mississippi Adams county. Please look through your records and visit with cousins to see if anyone can confirm my assumptions.
