Biography

"The son and namesake of the Rev. John Youngs, a Presbyterian minister who was one of the founders of Southold, Long Island, Col. John Youngs served as "High Sheriff" of this part of New York from 1680 to 1683, and had organized and led the local militia which protected settlers from hostile Indians. He had also been appointed by the colonial governor to serve as a judge, and was active in the regional government until the year before his death at age 75. His heirs included his son, Thomas Youngs, named as the executor of his estate; his married daughters Mrs. Deborah Longworth and Mrs. Martha Gardiner; and his grandson Daniel Youngs. Col. Youngs' gravestone is one of several in this burial ground believed to have been carved in England."[1]

He was christened on 10 April 1623 at Southwold, Suffolk County, England.

  • “Paucump further testifies that Occabauk was purchased by Colonel John Youngs about 1649 of the legal and undisputed owner of the tract at that time.”
  • Appointed High Sheriff of Yorkshire upon Long Island for the years 1680,1681,1682.
  • Colonel of the Suffolk County Militia in 1693.
  • Member of the Government Council of the Province of New York from 1683 to 1697.
  • Appointed by Governor Sloughter to be one of the Judges for the trial of Jacob Leisler.
  • His career [1]

Marriages

He married first his step-sister, Mary Gardner, daughter of Mary (Warren) Gardner, widow of Stephen Gardner, who married his father Rev John Yonges/Youngs about 1639.[2]

Because his wife's name was the same as his step-mother's name (at the time of their respective marriages) and the two women both married men by the name of John Youngs, there has been some confusion about which John married which Mary.

He married second Anne/Hannah Wines Nichols Elton Tooker circa 1691; 30 Dec. 1690 m cont; Southold, Long Island.[3]

Youngs-190 and Youngs-75 appear to represent the same person because: They should match in all respects now. Thank you for your help.

I set an unmerged match. These seem to be the same person but there are several conflicts in information that need to be resolved. Please see the documentation on Youngs-75 and see what you think.
