"The son and namesake of the Rev. John Youngs, a Presbyterian minister who was one of the founders of Southold, Long Island, Col. John Youngs served as "High Sheriff" of this part of New York from 1680 to 1683, and had organized and led the local militia which protected settlers from hostile Indians. He had also been appointed by the colonial governor to serve as a judge, and was active in the regional government until the year before his death at age 75. His heirs included his son, Thomas Youngs, named as the executor of his estate; his married daughters Mrs. Deborah Longworth and Mrs. Martha Gardiner; and his grandson Daniel Youngs. Col. Youngs' gravestone is one of several in this burial ground believed to have been carved in England."[1]
He was christened on 10 April 1623 at Southwold, Suffolk County, England.
He married first his step-sister, Mary Gardner, daughter of Mary (Warren) Gardner, widow of Stephen Gardner, who married his father Rev John Yonges/Youngs about 1639.[2]
He married second Anne/Hannah Wines Nichols Elton Tooker circa 1691; 30 Dec. 1690 m cont; Southold, Long Island.[3]
"Page 243.--JOHN YOUNGS. "In the name of God, Amen. This 20 day of February, 1696/7, I, John Youngs, of the Town of Southold, in the County of Suffolk, Esq., being in perfect health, I give and commit my soul to Almighty God, and my body to the earth to be decently interred by my executor, hereinafter mentioned, according to my estate and Quality." I leave all my houses, lands, and meadows, all and singular, unto my son, Thomas Youngs, his heirs and assigns forever. I leave two thirds of all household goods to my two daughters, Deborah Longworth and Martha Gardiner. I also give them two silver spoons, and four books a piece, such as my executor shall appoint them. I leave the other half of my household goods to my son Thomas. I give my grand son, Daniel Youngs, 6 shillings. Makes son Thomas executor."
Will of Col John Youngs died 1698. pg 21. His will of Feb 20 1696-7 gave all his lands to his son Thomas Youngs, and to each his two daughters, Deborah Longworth and Martha Gardiner.
John Youngs is buried in the Old Burying Ground of First Presbyterian Church, Southold.
