Biography

This profile is part of the Germanna, Virginia One Place Study.
16 Mar 1691/2 - Born
1717 - Immigrated to America with Anna Elizabeth, John and Andrew.
24 JUN 1726 - Granted 400 acres in the ford of the Rappahannock River.
1735 - Lieutenant in the militia of Orange Co.

The Zimmermann family came from Steffisburg, canton of Bern, Switzerland, before 1665 to Ravensburg, Baden, Germany. Ravensburg is very near Sulzfeld where John, the son of Christopher, stated he was from. The Sulzfeld Evangelische Church Parish (Lutheran) shows the birth of Johanne Christoph Zimmermann[1][2][3][4] on 16 Mar 1692 and his baptism as the 17th. He was the third son of Christian (Christian, Michael) Zimmermann and Eva Dünstler of Langenbruck, the daughter of Michael Dünster.

When Christopher was six years old, his mother died. His father remarried nine months later. The new wife was Maria Barbara Edel, the daughter of Englehard Edel and his wife Anna Maria of Sulzfeld. A large second family followed.

Johanne Christopher, at the age of eighteen years (on 27 Jul 1710), marrried a woman five or six years older than he was. This was Dorothea Rottle, the daughter of Martin Rottle of "Horndorff". Their first child, Johannes, was born 11 April 1711 and was baptized the next day. There were no other surviving children before Dorothea died on 16 January 1714 at twenty-seven years of age. Christopher was a widower at twenty-two years of age with a son Johannes of less than three years of age.

Johann Christoph Zimmermann arrived with his wife Elizabeth Albrecht and two sons, John and Andrew, in 1717 per his headright application. He had several tracts southeast of Mt. Pony, the first in 1726. [5][6]

Notes

Hans Christopher Zimmerman born 1692 did not change his name to Carpenter. The Carpenter in this profile is probably John Carpenter. William Carpenter (Zimmerman in German) came into the Germanna Colony with Elizabeth who came in with his brother John in 1721 (date disputed). A John Carpenter on June 20 1733 of St. Marks Parish, Spotsylvania County, received a headright grant of 150 acres in the same parish and county for importing Andrew kerker, Margaretta Kerker and Barbara Kerker. According to the book Before Germanna by John Cerny and Gary J. Zimmerman p.14. I believe this John Carpenter may be Johannes Christopher Carpenter IV. The Kerkchers were part of the SAR claim that associated Hans Christopher Zimmerman as a relative by means of having a son named John Carpenter. Hans Christopher did have a son named John who never anglicized the name to Carpenter. John had a son named John Jr. but kept the name Zimmerman. I do believe that John Carpenter that supposedly came into Germanna in 1721 is the person that you would be interested in. I would also be checking in the Kerker - Kerkcher- Kerkchler family.

I have been researching Hans Christopher Zimmerman for many years have multiple references which I will share that does not mentioned Christopher having a son named John Nicholas Zimmerman. He does have a son named Johannes "John" Zimmerman b. April 11, 1711, mother being Dorothea Rottle. That was born in I have never seen this John as John Nicholas Zimmerman or as John Nicholas Carpenter. Nor have I every seen where Hans Christopher Zimmerman anglicized his name to Carpenter. There was a John Zimmerman that anglicized his name to Carpenter in the that came to the Germanna Colony in 1721 died 1782 but was not part of Hans Christopher Zimmerman immediate family. If you do have any sources that show the Hans Christopher Zimmerman changed his name to Carpenter or had a son name Johannes Nicholas Zimmerman I would love to see it but in my many years of researching the Zimmerman line I have seen only document that has mentioned a link which was an SAR Application 43924 is incorrect in the assumption that Hans Christopher Zimmerman changed his name to Carpenter. Some people have have assumed this name change because of the erroneous assumption within this application.. Here are a few references that you may be interested in on Christopher that I have not seen referenced other than what I have added in the last few weeks.
