Biography

Nat's earliest Australian-born ancestor was Alexander Ryrie (b. 17/12/1827 in Sydney, NSW), followed by Mary Ann Scott (b. 17/9/1832 in Fremantle, WA), then Charlotte Faunce (b. 30/4/1836 in Liverpool, NSW), then Louise Powell (b. 8/10/1841 in Turalla, NSW), then Mortimer Giles (b. 12/8/1848 in Adelaide, SA). Therefore Nat is the 6th generation of his family born in Australia (from Mary Ann Scott being the 1st generation born in Australia).

Nat's earliest ancestors to arrive in Australia (colonised in 1788) were Captain Richard Brooks and Christiana Brooks who arrived in March 1814 on the ship "Spring" with their children. They initially lived in Sydney at the corner of Pitt and Hunter streets where Captain Brooks began a profitable business supplying meat and provisions to ships, to the public and to the government store. He was also an agent for Lloyds of London and for the shipping that called at Port Jackson. Nat's ancestors who arrived in Sydney were:

1814 Brooks family (Ship - Spring)

1825 Ryrie family (Ship - Triton)

1832 Faunce family (Ship - Clyde)

1837 N S Powell

1846 D H Campbell

Nat's earliest ancestor to arrive in Perth/Fremantle in the Swan River Colony of Western Australia (proclaimed in 1829) was Captain Daniel Scott. He arrived in August 1829 on the ship "Calista" and was appointed as the first postmaster of the Swan River Colony then was employed by the colonial government as the Deputy Harbour Master of Fremantle Port, at a salary of a hundred pounds a year. Nat's ancestors who arrived in Perth were:

1829 D Scott (Ship - Calista)

1829 F H Davis family (Ship - Lotus)

1850 W Gale

Nat's earliest ancestors to arrive in the colony of South Australia (proclaimed in December 1836) were William Giles who arrived in October 1837 with his wife and 11 children on the ship "Hartley". They lived initially at the settlement on Kangaroo Island before moving to Adelaide in 1841, when William became colonial manager of the South Australian Company. Nat's ancestors who arrived in South Australia were:

1837 W Giles family (Ship - Hartley)

1839 F H Taylor family (Ship - D'Auvergne)

1839 W Newland family (Ship - Sir Charles Forbes)

1839 J Kelly family (Ship - Lady Bute)

1839 M T Adamson family (Ship - Recovery)

1839 B H McFarlane family (Ship - Superb)

1841 J S Browne

1848 L Waite family (Ship - Hindoo)

1848 A Chalmers (Ship - Princess Royal)

1852 A Andrews family (Ship - Sydney)

1853 T Johnson family (Ship - Fop Smit)

1880 J Craven

1882 T Blackburn

1913 D W Wighton (after Wighton family arrived in New Zealand in 1885)

Hi Nat

I have just been updating a webpage I created for my family a couple of years ago, and as I borrowed some extended quotes from your history I thought I would let you know. We are conneced by Margaret Macfarlane, nee Horne, from Stirkoke House near Wick in Caithness, Scotland. I knew of her elopement with Allan Macfarlane, but you added a lot of interesting detail. The original citation was to TPG.com.au, but on checking that I find it has reached its end of life. Before I publish the update, how would you like to be credited?

The original document is at https://express.adobe.com/post/l0UNYTWgiGbAe/

The revision adds to the tree at the front, an introduction and a couple of maps to help people locate place in the text, as well as tidying up some typos which always manage to get through!

Best wishes Tom Carr

Nat: Hello, trust all is well with you. Just a 'heads-up' that I have adopted the profile for Faunce-171 (amongst other connected profiles) on which you have previously worked. I suspect that there may be possible errors and, as a very distant cousin, I hope to verify details where possible.

Regards.....Phil (Grace-883).

Here's another Blackburn-related profile -- spouse of Thomas Wordsworth Gavin Blackburn. I don't know of any children (did not find any born in Queensland), nor when she and TWG emigrated to Canada, so have at it! (I'm busy with other family members who are not Blackburn related.)
