Biography

I have been researching my ancestors using Ancestry.com for almost 20 years (on and off). I know I descend from 5 generations of farm families who were all living in central Illinois by the 1840s. I *believe* I have identified as many as 254 (!) direct ancestors who migrated from England, The Netherlands, Scotland, Northern Ireland, France, Germany & Ireland to theAmerican colonies before the Revolutionary War. Crazy! I will slowly, carefully, upload/transfer my tree to Wikitree, populating it *only* with ancestors, stories, and records about whom I have a fairly high degree of confidence with some confirmation of records and stories.

Hey, Joe. I see you have been busy on WikiTree, cousin. Thanks for all your contributions. Keep up the good work.

I also noticed that you have added the Status Confirmed with DNA to many of the ancestors in your tree. The requirement for doing that in WikiTree is somewhat onerous in that it requires an exact comparison of DNA tests be cited on each of the associated profiles. Without that Citation, someone from WikiTree will come along and change the status of all those relatives, leaving comment on each profile. There is a DNA Confirmation Citation Maker app on WikiTree which can help you document those DNA matches and correctly add the Confirmed by DNA status. Hope that might help you some. - Bill

Hi Bill,

I haven't the time, interest or inclination to go through the onerous steps of confirming DNA. I backed everyone off (including my own fully known parents and grandparents) to merely 'confident." Carry on. joe

Hey Joe,

Thanks again for signing the Honor Code some time ago. I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions?

I have initiated a merge for one of the profiles that had a comment on them. Please approve the merge, that will remove the duplicate. More information can be found on the merge help pages.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Thanks for upgrading, Joe. I hope you discover as much about your family as I have about mine over the years.

The How-to pages have some quick tips on working with both the Wiki pages and our other members.

Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

Hi Debi,

Thank you for the welcome message. I'm slowly populating my tree with people who are well sourced. I'd rather hit a dead end than have an inaccurate or speculative connection. On that note, while populating my tree, quite a few ancestors were correctly auto-populated with well-sourced individuals. One, however, is unsourced and almost certainly incorrect -- Mary Byrd, ID Byrd-266 [1] -- which led to further incorrect people (her parents). I would like to remove that person/profile from my tree (without editing or changing the profile which I didn't create). Is there a way to remove and replace the Byrd-266 profile from my individual tree without impacting the existing incorrect profile and attached connections (which are also unsourced and, from my research, incorrect)? Sorry for the long question. I'd like to simply simply remove the Byrd-266 profile from my tree without a ripple effect on anybody. Is that possible? I'd rather have no sourced ancestor than an incorrect one. Thank you kindly, Joe I have messaged the

Hi Joe,

I looked at the profile for Noble and don't see any documentation showing who his parents were. As it is right now, his mother could be Mary, Elizabeth, or someone completely different.

The next step would be to add your sources for his parentage in either a comment or in the sources section on his profile. That will help his profile manager assess your information as compared to her records so that the two of you can reach an agreement on who his parents are. It sounds like you already agree on his father being Moses but there aren't any sources indicating that. She isn't very active at WikiTree so it may take a while to hear from here. In the meantime, you can start a Genealogist to Genealogist (G2G) forum post to get some other members to look at it with you. If you don't hear back from her, you can ask to be made manager of the profile by following the steps in the Unresponsive Profile Manager form for Noble Standley. If you ever need that form for a different profile, click the Family Tree & Tools tab and scroll all the way to the bottom.

A new profile could be created for his mother if you have both agreed that it is not Mary. The profile could be attached as a spouse of Moses (hopefully with a marriage record for them). Then the mother for the other two children attached to Moses should be researched to determine whether Elizabeth, Mary, or someone else is their mother.

It can seem a slow and tedious process but sources, collaboration, and attention to detail are the way we work together to build this world-wide tree.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Debi

Thank you. That's helpful. I'm going to accept things as they are for now. There's no reliable source that I can find for the wife of Moses Stanley (and I've looked for 15+ years, on and off). Since there is a small % DNA connection between myself, "Mary" Byrd and her father William Byrd, I'll just accept things as they are. I'd rather have sources and records, but these are VERY hard to come by, especially in the 1700s.

Thanks! joe
