Biography

Jabez Snow was the 5th and youngest son of Nicholas Snow and "Mayflower" passenger, Constance (Hopkins) Snow. He was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1642, before his parents settled Eastham on Cape Cod in 1644-45; moving there as an infant. He married Elizabeth Smith on September 5, 1670; one day before the birth of their son, Jabez Snow II. He was fined 10 Pounds for having sexual relations before marriage but does not seem to have been otherwise shunned or importuned by marrying his pregnant finacee. He and Elizabeth were the parents of 9 other children together. Captain Jabez Snow died on 27 December 1690[1] leaving Elizabeth with several minor-age children to raise.

Even though Jabez was the youngest son, he was clearly one of his father's favorites, as seen in his father, Nicholas Snow's Will of November 1676:

"..... Item To my son Jabez Snow, I Give all this my Land lying between my house and my son Thomas Paines, and seaven acrees att the base pond lying between Daniell Cole and William Brown; and a halfe acree of Marsh att the end of it and six acrees of upland att the herring pond; and an acree and halfe of meddow att silver springe lying on the Northsyde of William Walkers, and the Clift of upland adjacent to the above said Meddow and all the sedge about it, to Ephraime Done; and that prte of my house hee lives in as longe as my wife or I Doe live;
Item I Give him two acrees of Meddow att the Great Meddow lying between the Eel Creeke and Joseph hardings;
Item To my son Jabez, I Give that my four acrees of Meddow att Billinsgate Due to mee yett unlayed out; All this abovesaid upland and meddow I Give to my son Jabez Snow II and the heires of his body, lawfully begotten, for ever;
Item This my meddow about my house I Give to my son Jabez;
Item I Give to my Loveing wife Constant Snow all my stocke of Cattle sheep horses swine whatsoever, to be att her Disposall for the Comfort and support of her life, with all the moveable Goods I am posessed of and after her Decease, stocke and Movables to be equally Devided amongst all my Children;
Item To my wife I Give the use and Disposall of the parte of my house shee now Dwells in During her life time, and after her Decease to be my son Jabez Snowe...."[2]

Jabez Snow was admitted a freeman at Eastham on 7 June 1681, and he served there as surveyor of highways and selectman. As a Militia Lieutenant, he engaged in the expedition to Canada of 1690.

Probate: 8 April 1695:[3]

"Lieut. Jabez Snow of Eastham, dec'd sometime since is settled as follows: By Reason of ye change of Government and other troubles, ye settlement of estate was defered until this time, and Administrix gives a satisfactory account. 9 children, eldest son Jabez Snow [II] to have doubble part: 38 pounds, 8 shillings. Son Edward 19 lbs, 4 s.; son Thomas 19 lbs, 4 s; 6 daus; 14 lbs 4 s each. Estate settled 8 Apr 1695."[4][5]
His inventory was taken on 20 April 1691.[6]

I am interested in Jabez's military history. I've seen Lieutenant and Captain, but cannot find a source for either. Can anyone pointe in the right direction?

You'll probably find more in the "Hutchinson Papers," but it'll take some digging.

Posting to G2G might bring you some help from the Military researchers on WikiTree. This in not really in my tool box, but there are a lot of folks here who know a lot about the subject.

In the 1600's Jabez would have been a member of the "trainband." That's the sort of thing you would find in the town records. It might be a simple reference to Jabez using his title. The Eastham town records start here https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G979-QJFD?i=46&cc=2061550&cat=287247 Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an index. You might also look in the Plymouth Colony Records in the appropriate time frame. https://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcdigitalrecords/pcolony.htm These should be indexed.

Just want to point out an inconsistency on the marriage date: 20 October 1668 (marriage data field), 10 October 1668 (Elizabeth's bio), and 5 September 1670 (Jabez's bio). Probably would be good to have a source to specify as the Mayflower "silver" book on Hopkins doesn't give Elizabeth a surname and only says that the marriage occurred before 06 Sep 1670.

Snow-3423 and Snow-50 appear to represent the same person because: My book Mayflower Families through Five Generations Vol. 6--Stephen Hopkins by John D. Austin p. 101 lists Sarah Snow Young as the second wife of Jonathan Sparrow and her parents as Jabez Snow and Elizabeth.

I think these need to be merged.

Snow-50 and Snow-2620 appear to represent the same person because: Merge of mother proposed. Please merge. Thanks.
