How do I delete this?
in Genealogy Help by Cynthia Curtis G2G3 (3.7k points)

I went to reject a merge and saw it is already done.

Very frustrating.
You need to give us a link, or something, so that we'll know what you're talking about.  At least the profile ID.
If a profile ID was entered in a message or the question, people could help you to investigate where the problem occurred, but without an ID, it is difficult to help.

You can't undo a merge, if that's what you mean by 'delete this.'  The only way to recover is to recreate the profile that was merged away.  You may be able to find sufficient data in the Changes log of the surviving profile to do that, if you don't have other backup material.

If you were Profile Manager of one of the merged profiles, you should have seen a merge proposal and had an opportunity to weigh in on it.  If you didn't respond one way or the other, then the proposal would have received default approval after 30 days.  If you weren't a Profile Manager, but it is a line you do care about, you might consider requesting to be on the trusted lists of the profiles.

Most of the details about merging are covered here:

I do not think thirty days went by
I meant I wish I could delete my question. I edited it but would have preferred to just make my “question” go away.
I did go and recreate what was merged away but I am still not happy that this has happened. I actually brought it to G2G a while back but got no response.

This is a line that I literally created a profile for someone to work with rather than obliterate a different line.
You should see an option to "hide" under your question, if it hasn't been closed.  It doesn't delete the question -- I think the moderators and leaders can still see it, but we of the masses can't
Thanks for the star Julie!

Keep in mind that some don't understand the merge process, and to a certain extent we're all learning, so it's good to work with whomever sent the request, ask them if you can help, and see what they intended. Most times it's just that they overlooked something obvious to you but not to them. Sometimes they think a merge is the way to gain access to a profile. Sometimes the profiles are private and they're guessing. Either way, it's an opportunity to help and clear up misunderstandings. But do reject merges that are invalid first - that should prevent something accidental from going too far.

The merged profile had two entirely different parents and wildly different dates.

“My” line is back to par but for how long?
If you reject the merge, they can re-propose the merge again and again if they feel it was not taken seriously, which is why I recommend reaching out to them and asking questions. A merge cannot proceed without approvals from both parties or a 30 day period where it is ignored, so your line is safe as long as you are responding appropriately to the merge request. Keep in mind it is only a "request" and not a "demand" that you must honor. The only merges that are really required is when two completely and clearly duplicate profiles exist, as we're a one world tree - which means that only 1 profile per person can exist. But if there are differences (as in this particular case), then rejecting the merge is completely appropriate.

Mostly venting.

Thank you, all.

In order to help avoid a similar merge request happening again, I suggest you  make a note on the profile (including cross refererencing the other profile) explaining why they are not the same person. It should help prevent any "honest" mistakes
