Looking for proof that Elizabeth (Morton) Carey, wife of Abraham Carey, of the Bahamas was the daughter of Benjamin Morton and wife Ann Culmer. Ann's father may have been Richard Culmer with wife Ann.  There is a will in the Bahamas archives for a Richard Culmer with an executor of Benjamin Morton. Does anyone have access to that will?  I have written the archives to obtain a copy but have yet to get a response.

Hey Carolyn:

The Methodist Records of South Eleuthera have some really helpful records (if one can actually read them.) The birth of a child was noted with the addition of the mother's name (good) and the names of the mother's parents (fantastic). Thus the birth record for Elizabeth Morton reads:

"Elizabeth, daughter of of Benjamin and Ann Morton, who was daughter of Richard and Ann Culmer, born at Tarpum Bay 1 October 1834....baptism information here" .

The wills of the Bahamas are on film and if you can identify the year that Richard Culmer's will was proved - your local LDS Family History Library can send for them. The Bahamas Genealogy Group can help you identify which film to order from Salt Lake City.

Thank you, Ann!  That is terrific!  Do you know that this is the Elizabeth who married Abraham Carey?  I have seen several Elizabeth's in the Dolly Mae CD.
I can't guarantee that she is --- but she is the most probable candidate to date. And the date of birth -- works.

The problem of families using the same names in the same generation in small communities makes it tough for Bahamian researchers. All one can do is establish a "preponderance of evidence".

I have some Saunders in Harbour Island that make my head spin! Four with the same Christian name born within 10 years of each other. I have wives names and marriage dates ... but who belongs to whom?

Thanks, Ann. Was hoping you had proof.  I know what you mean. I have a number of William Careys that drive me crazy.
