I'm looking for the parents of my great-grandmother, Margaret Anna (Clontz-213) Gragg, born in McDowell (?) County, North Carolina, USA in about 1874. I have only two solid pieces of evidence, a death certificate that list mother as "Annie" (no father listed), and a published genealogy entry, both linked and discussed on her profile.

Here is a clipping of that obituary that you mentioned in the profile, which mentions two then living sisters by name:

That would mean that this family in the 1910 Census for Rutherford County, North Carolina is likely her mother and two sisters:

Roger,

Thanks so much for the transcription and for the  extra step of finding the surviving sisters in the 1910 Census! It is the concrete evidence I was looking for to determine at least one of her parents names. With the additional information I've been uncovering from and investigation of what might be her grandfather Isom Clontz, I think that we have a connection, at least to Margaret Anna's mother's family! https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clontz-215

Hello Vince.

There is very intresting information on her husband and children in FindAGrave, see

https://findagrave.com/memorial/105361131/margaret-anna-gragg

I found some records that, I think, may be of help in your search.

  • She went by "Anna" in many records

Example: Birth record of her son Burgin Clinton (Boy, born to G. B. Gragg and Anna Klontz on 31 Aug 1916):

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSBB-JSF3-G?cc=3477667

  • She might be younger than expected

Clontz, Anna married Gragg, J. B. on 6 Jan 1895. According to the MARRIAGE REGISTER, she was born ab. 1877 (listed 18 y/o). They are listed almost at the bottom of the page at the LH side in the following image:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89V6-HQ77

  • According to  both documents, the marriage register and the birth certificate of her son, Anna was born in McDowell Co.

There is a great chance that this is Anna in the 1880 Census (line 2 in the Census sheet)

(Listing of family # 192 begins at the bottom of the image 22 of 30)

Thanks  Rubén, I was familiar with those citations, I need to get them added to the profile. I was hoping for some concrete evidence for her parents. I've been investigating what might be her grandfather Isom Clontz, and getting some additional coorboration. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clontz-215
