Isn't it redundant to have two Huguenot categories?

I just noticed this category exists both in the plural and in the singular. Surely this is unnecessary.

Can they be merged? Thanks.

To follow a bit on Alan's notation, the plural category is specifically not for individuals and reads, in part, "This category should not be placed on individual profiles" though that has occurred with 31 individuals. There is a method to the category structure in WT and I would suggest the descriptions on the three Huguenot categories be reviewed jointly by Religion and Categorization (which is presently leaderless).

I'm sure I'm not the only one who is dead confused by the category stacks. I have a one-place study and can't figure out at all how to order things in it.
"Category stack" is a good name for what is essentially an informal domain (information science) ontology. In other words, an hierarchical outline. It is a tool for organising concepts by definition and relation.

I have a one-name study which is organised in a way that makes sense to me. Changes in my understanding of the subject (a surname in this case) cause me to change the organisation of my Name Study pages.

Ultimately, categories will facilitate the analysis and synthesis of data contained in my Study's person profiles, and so, the formulation of conclusions presented in its pages.

This seems to be the opposite of WikiTree guidance. From Help: Category Names:

  • We use singular form for topic categories and plural form for set categories.
    • Topic categories are named after a topic, for example, Category:Norfolk contains subcategories, free-space pages and profiles (when no lower category is known) relating to the topic Norfolk.
    • Set categories are named after the set of profiles they contain, so use the plural form if there is one. For example, we use Category:Czech Artists not Category:Czech Artist. This doesn't mean that we add unnecessary words to the name in order to pluralize it, e.g. we say Category:Baseball instead of Category:Baseball Topics.

Liz,

You raise a good point, which argues for re-naming the subject categories, rather than merging them.
I have contacted the involved projects to try to bring resolution...it is unlikely to occur overnight. Also, Religion had undertaken an overhaul of its category structure but I am unsure if this had been completed (and I am unsure if Huguenot fell under Religion).
took me a while (and a lot of clicking) to find the category under the Religions hierarchy...

To update everyone on where this is presently: none of the involved categories should be merged (although at least one is, imo, a candidate for elimination to reduce confusion). The category for individuals (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Huguenot) will soon get a rewrite and the cut-off date will be brought to the head of the category page (as that date is often not observed). The Review and Construction Notice on that page since 2018 has been removed as it was confusing.

The project member page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Huguenot_Migration_Project) is functioning as it should.

The issue of structure is one that must be addressed by Religion and Categorization (the latter without a leader at present). It appears to me that at least one level in the current structure is unnecessary but the broader Religion leaders needs to weigh in on that question (they can pm me for my notes on this).
That's great. Thanks very much, T.

One category pertains to the attribute of an individual (Huguenot), and the other category pertains to a religious social group (Huguenots).

Alan, I wonder if I'm the only one confused by this. Under what circumstances would one use the plural rather than the singular?

When one is referring to a religious movement rather than a personal attribute.

well, Huguenots (plural) category needs fixing of its text, as it is obviously intended as  Religion project item, but bears conflicting instructions of placing profiles in appropriate sub-categories of local churches, and then says it should have no sub-cats.  Ooopsblush  The Huguenot singular is for the Huguenot project

I believe the religion category should be renamed.  The term Huguenot was applied by Catholics to the people who were of the ''religion soi-disant réformée'' (self-proclaimed reformed religion).  Huguenot was rather derogatory in nature.

This Muraille  is a monument in Geneva to the 4 great preachers, who were John Knox, Guillaume Farel, Jean Calvin and Théodore de Bèze.  If you must give the religion a name, then for France it would more appropriately be named Calvinism in my opinion.  That would avoid the imbroglio we currently have.  There should be no merging of these 2 categories.

Quakers also started out as a derogatory term but became one embraced by the Society of Friends. Likewise, I do not believe Huguenot is any longer viewed as a negative term (perhaps I should say that it has no negative connotations in the Americas).

my point is that it was NOT the name of the religion or church.  Which were called ''Temple de'' as opposed to ''Église de'' (Temple of rather than Church of)

I've removed the 31 profiles that were listed under the Category:Huguenots, since individual profiles should not have that category.  Presently those 31 are now listed under the category Huguenot.
