PLEASE ANSWER THIS POST TO JOIN THE GERMANY PROJECT: If you have a question about German Genealogy, please create a new G2G post with your question (click on "Ask A Question" above) and add the tag "Germany". Thanks!

The Germany Project is seeking members to join us as we add and improve the profiles of our German ancestors (those that lived in the country we now know as the Federal Republic of Germany, formerly the German Confederation, Prussia, Holy Roman Empire, etc.).

The Germany Project covers all things German, including 16 regional teams, functional teams for translation and profile improvement, as well as historical, migrational and special-interest teams. If there’s not an existing team that covers your area of interest, just let us know and we can look into adding one. Take a look at our main PROJECT PAGE for links to our teams.

The Germany Project is a helpful community that encourages collaboration between people from all around the world. Along with sourcing, connecting and improving German profiles, our project is developing a German portal, which will make it much easier to collaborate with German-speaking members. The future of the Germany Project is bright with possibilities and it’s a very exciting time to join us.

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

Joining is easy … just post an ANSWER below (as opposed to a comment or reply - note that comments will be answered but then hidden).  Please state:

  • that you'd like to join the project,
  • what your German-related interests are, and
  • what you want to contribute to the project.

Our only contribution requirements are: (1) you respond to twice yearly check-ins, and (2) you improve one German profile every 6 months.

The only thing you’ve got to lose is a brick-wall or two!

P.S. You don't have to join the project to add the German Roots sticker to your profile ... simply copy the following and add it to your profile:

{{German Roots Sticker}}

Hi,

I'd like to join the German Roots Project. I cannot locate many German relatives, so this is my main interest. I would like to add more information to the known German Relatives and find documentation about them. I would also like to engage in discussion about how to find these supporting documents. I also have relatives of Polich decent who born in a German forced labour camp during WWII and had success in finding documentation about them and my grandparents in the victims of war crime database. This information may be helpful to others.

I would like to join to research Neuner/Neiner from Neuburg an der Donau Bavaria area who emigrated to the US in 1852.  They were Catholic and manifest states farmers.  The paternal German ancestry is my dead end.  I have a little high school German knowledge of the language and geography

Hi Mark,

I awarded you a bagde and left a comment on your profile. Welcome to the Germany Project!

I would like to join the German Roots Project. My mother’s surname is Dehner. We don’t know much of the German side of the family before they came to live in Pennsylvania.

Hi,

I would like to join the Germany Project. I have German roots from the father of my paternal grandfather, and would like to explore them further as my latest brick wall is the parents of his maternal grandfather. I do hope to knock down this brick wall, as well as work on additional German  family members of his.

Thank you,

Bob Clark

I would like to join this project group.  I know little of my German roots but I've heard that they came from Helmsbrecht, Germany.  My great grandfather, Johann Adam Sauermann was a weaver by trade on his death certificate.  I will see what I can add to the group.  Thanks in advance.

Almost every ancestor on my father's side is from Germany, all but one branch being Colonial settlers (so I have MANY German surnames), but I haven't yet delved into the German research. I've put it off because, well, I still have lots to do here in the US, but honestly, I'm expecting mid-1700's and earlier German research to be very difficult and rife with roadblocks. So yes, I would like to join the project, but I am of little to no use to anyone else right now. I'd better start off by just learning HOW to do German research. I see your Beginner's Guide isn't up and running yet, so I'll start with your Project Resources and try just one ancestor (my Kerstetter forefather) and see how much I can learn. Thanks for the Project and the resources! Hopefully, someday I'll have enough skills to help others through the Project.

My great grandfather came to the US with his parents and a maid. Both parents died almost immediately (in New Orleans as their point of entry). I am unable to find out who they were, their names. I do know when and I think where my great grandfather was born, and I am trying to find out about his parents and their earlier families.

I would like to joint the project. I meet the first two requirements and have not made any contributions at this point.
by James Deppe G2G Crew (500 points)
Thanks for your interest James, please try to make your 100 contributions first and then ask again.
My great grandfather was born in the Lippe Detmold area, around 1849. Supposedly his father was German, but his mother may have been French, as suggested from my grandfather's autobiography.  The place of their marriage is unknown to me, but my grandfather did say in is autobiography that they left Europe from Dieppe France and entered the US through New Orleans, again suggesting a French connection.
To get help with that question the best way is to ask in G2g under Genealogy Help. You should provide there all what you know and a lot of people will try to help you, if there is something online.

I’d love to help but not sure where to begin. My mom and her parents left Germany in the early 1950. My opa is from Prussia and Oma is from Finsterwalde. Oma is a Kitzschmar and is related to Johann Kotzschmar the famous organist from Portland Maine. I’m unable to locate records being they lived close to the SE border.

I have been trying to add the German Roots Sticker (see below) to my profile but have not been able to figure out how.  Please let me know how to do this.  (I would like to join the project except that I can't participate right now with my current life situation.)

P.S. You don't have to join the project to add the German Roots sticker to your profile ... simply copy the following and add it to your profile:

{{German Roots Sticker}}

by Kathy H. G2G3 (3.5k points)
Go to your profile's edit page and paste {{German Roots Sticker}} directly under the word Biography; then save the page. Nothing more is required.
Thank you.  I did as you suggested, and it was easy to do.

I refreshed the Profile page, and there it is!  Thanks!

Hi, I'd like to join the Germany project.

My direct paternal ancestor was from northern Baden, and I think his ancestors came from Thuringen and/or Switzerland (the German part). My direct maternal ancestor tracks back to Bayern (Bavaria). I speak & read some German, including German script; and I'm happy to clean up profiles and advise on the proper naming of places for the historical periods.

I'd like to join the German Roots Project, my Grand mothers side was from the Augsburg area. I cannot locate many German relatives, so this is my main interest. I would like to add more information to the known German Relatives I have found so far, and find additional documentation about them.

I'd like to join the Germany Project. I am German and live in Germany. I've been researching my family for more than 25 years, and I am conducting a global one-name study on the BONITZ surname. My special research interests are in Sachsen (Saxony), but also in Hessen, Württemberg or Niedersachsen. I'd like to help to improve and organize German profiles and understand how categorization can help to structure my own research and profiles. Pls let me know how I can contribute. Regards, Jochen.

Hi Dieter. I wish to join your Germany Project and resume my German search into my great, great Grandad father Hermann Hartwig Meins family, from Bad Oldesloe. Hermann Baptized 1815 and immigrated to Porth Adelaide (Journeyman Blacksmith) with Lutheran Parish group 1847 aboard "Hermann Von Beckerath".
by Living Meins G2G Crew (950 points)
Neil, you first have to sign the Honor Code and then wait for 90 days and accumulate at least 100 contributions. Because you already added the "Germany"-tag, you can follow what's going on around the project.
I have sent you a PM Neil
