USBH Weekend Sprint: Help us add missing birth locations June 2023

Welcome to US Black Heritage Project's weekend sprint!

Friday June 23--Sunday June 25, midnight

Goal: To work together as a project to add as many birth locations as we can in 3 days to profiles with the African-American sticker. This will help us prevent duplicates and more easily find family.

Instructions:

  • Post an answer below and tell us which of the 76 pages on the report you will be working on. Each page has 100 profiles. (to get to your page on the report, change the last number in the URL to your page. It starts on page 0) This will help us prevent tripping over each other.
  • Use sources to find the birth location. If the profile has no sources, find and add some. (Hint: US Census records are an easy way to find birth locations)
  • If you cannot find at least the state of birth, make a best estimate based on sources, mark the location as uncertain, and add a research note. See this help page about estimating birth locations.
  • We will not be tracking individual scores, but you can keep track of your own contributions and comment on your post at the end of the weekend just for fun.

Thank you for helping us improve our profiles!

Pages claimed: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 18, 28, 29, 30, 35, 42, 44, 45, 50, 52, 61, 64, 65, 74

Before: 7677 profiles missing birth locations

After: 6409 profiles (1268 completed!)

29 being my favorite number, I will begin with page 29. I took care of all the profiles I manage before last week.

I'll do page 28 as well since some of the group I'm working on are on that page
I pushed through and got page 29 done. Whew. Lots to fix on those profiles. I'll be working on page 28 throughout the week. I'd like to get the numbers of missing birth locations down below 5000.

Page 17 claimed.
by Beverly Diaz G2G6 Mach 4 (40.7k points)
Thanks, Beverly!
I'm sorry, I only provided ten people on my page with birth locations. I kept getting sidetracked by other records so I kept working on completing profiles. I did get one person connected to the big tree though!

Also, I found someone who actually committed bigamy. That was interesting. I'll try to get through more this week.
No worries, Beverly. Many of us are finding other things on many of these profiles that need work. I'm going to keep working on my two pages throughout the week as well. Nice job with the connection! That's worth 100 birth locations :-)

I will give it a go.  I'll take page 72.

This is my first time participating in this.  Is there a certain way we should be documenting the changes made and / or recording this as some sort of challenge tracker?

If you want to keep track of your own numbers, you're welcome to. We just run a WikiTree+ report that tells us how many profiles with the {{African-American Sticker}} are missing a birthplace and are able to see the change in numbers from before and after the sprint. So there's no official tracker or anything you need to do manually.
Thank you!
Thanks, Sara!

I will give this a try. I think I am claiming page 35 (that is what it says in the URL), but it is actually the 36th page
by W Robertson G2G6 Pilot (120k points)
that's correct. It starts on page 0. Thanks!

Thank you, D! By the way, I sent you a message a couple of weeks ago about the Caribbean Project and some major changes happening, but hadn't heard back. Did you get that?

I started at the top. Page 0.
by L A Banta G2G6 Mach 2 (27.4k points)
Finished page 0? Just a few I wouldn't hazard a guess. Will the list update to see the progress thus far? I cannot figure out how to update the list.
Also I thought I had already updated all of my own profiles created without birthplace, using the link last week, but see a few were found by others. I found a couple of Emma's not done on page 0, even though I read Emma did hers, too. So, hopefully all these stragglers will be caught.  ; -D
Thanks, LA! I only saw one of mine on page 0 and it's one from an old gedcom clean up we haven't been able to source yet. Fingers crossed all the others are done. This list won't update until a few days from now when Aleš runs the data dump. He runs that update weekly somewhere between Sunday and Weds.
I'm sure you are correct as usual and I have made some egregious error, but two profiles I created definitely slipped through the lack of birthplace filter. Orphaned.  Oh well.
We'll catch them all eventually :-)
