Family consensus on my mom's side traces us back to Nicholas Holt b1602 England down through Nehemiah Holt b.1723 Andover MA. My great grandfather was Wilber Edward Holt b 1859 , a dentist in Newark, NJ.

Curious about filling out family tree.

Hi Jennifer. Welcome to Wikitree. Nehemiah's birth year matches Holt-2289 but his ancestor named Nicholas has the year of birth as 1608 rather than 1602 but if they are the same person, then you and I are cousins. My paternal great grandfather Mack married Bertha Wolcott, who descends from a line of Fords that  connect to Dinah Holt (George, Henry, Nicholas). Wilbur is my 4th cousin 5 generations back. Familysearch is very helpful when filling in the missing pieces. There will be sources attached. Here is Wilbur's tree and I see Harry P St. Clair as the husband of his granddaughter.

Jennifer, you can start your family tree by adding your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents with sources.

Nicholas Holt of Andover is already up here so do not create him or his children.  Which of his children are you connected?

Then, you can add additional family members.

Welcome to WikiTree smiley

Nehemiah Holt of Andover is also already created. It looks like all of his children are already profiled, so connecting to this line shouldn't be too difficult.

Please be sure, Jennifer, that you don't create duplicates while you're working. Ask for help if you need it.

Please do not upload any unsourced gedcoms. Just dealing with one lot now. You are actually far better to go slowly and carefully through the info you have checking it against any already on wiikitree and making sure you have reliable, preferably primary sources for profiles that you might need to create if not already on WT. Ancestry trees are not a reliable source, but if they have a primary source cited check that is correct and then you can use that source.

I hope that is a little helpful. If you are looking at English ancestry then joining the England Project and doing their Orphan Trail would helo you.

Regards,

Ann

Hi Jennifer, welcome to WikiTree. You've picked a great place to work on your family. There are so many resources online, it can be a bit overwhelming. But here, there are a lot of people around to help if you run into problems. The biggest thing that has been important to me in my own work is making sure that as I add each family member, I have verifiable sources that can be followed and verified long after I am gone (may the internet last forever). Those sources are included in their profiles so others can follow up on them as they would like.

Additionally, I keep all of that information in a local program on my hard drive. I personally use Rootsmagic, but there are lots of others, all with their own particulars. Whenever possible, I download a copy of the record to include in that program instead of just linking it (like we do on WikiTree because of copyright issues).

Start with yourself and just build, filling out as you go. Try to have at least a partial profile (including all known facts) before moving to the next.

There are lots of us here who will be glad to help our with questions - feel free to reach out to me if you like.
