Awarding Badge Suggestion

I was going to award a badge for someone who has clearly contributed to WikiTree far beyond most volunteers and helped me tremendously. I went to their badge page and saw they had a lot already, but had no idea what I could award them. I saw the link at the bottom of their page to let me award one for them. Perfect. On that page, I saw the note that a person can only receive any badge once. Makes sense. I reviewed the list of badges and decided on one. I entered their ID and then thought about what I wanted to say. Once I was done, I submitted it, but was told the badge had already been awarded. I tried for a different one that seemed appropriate. Already awarded. Now I was frustrated that I could not thank them with something.

Suggestion:

1. Reverse the order of the questions 1 & 2 and enter the WikiTree ID first. Then the second question for badge selection could check their ID to limit the badge selection to just those still available. If the coding of that drop down does not allow dynamic entries, maybe add a link above the drop down to a hyperlink to display available badges (assuming they already entered the user ID).

2. Add a note on the page to recommend sending a wonderful wikitreer award if the member has all the other badges. Maybe create a Help page on the topic with instructions how to do it. I didn't know it existed until I was searching the forum if my recommendation had already been made.

When we "thank" another member for a contribution, we see a message that suggests considering additional publiic recognition.  It explains how to check their badge page to see if any of the 5 special badges are still available to be awarded, and it also suggests considering a Wonderful WikiTreer post.

Most WikiTreers "who have clearly contributed far beyond most volunteers" received all of the badges long ago and also have received plenty of Wonderful Wikitreer posts. A public or private  message about the specific actions/help that you appreciated is always worthwhile, though.

Thanks, Ellen. That information is likely very well understood by the Wikitreers who have spent more than a few months on the site. My suggestion is driven from my current advantage of being very new to Wikitree and being able to give live "new member" feedback from my direct experience. As a software developer and documentation writer, I am all too familiar with the "knowledge bias" we bring when creating documentation and we often forget to "forget" what we know from spending thousands of hours in an application. Everything seems second nature after that. wink

Hey Cousin David! Thanks for the reach out! I see we are connected through my line that links to the Delano family which links me to Richard Warren of the Mayflower. Do you have any Mayflower passengers in your ancestry? I'm new enough here that I don't know how to look that up for other members beside myself.

I love your photo. Did someone snap that of you when you found out I was your 11th cousin? cool
