Polish cemeteries names' problem

Hi.

Most of polish cemeteries named "cmentarz komunalny" or "cmentarz parafialny". In effect it will cause a problem in searches a specific cemetery within one voivodeship in the future. For example Category: Mazowieckie, Cemeteries.

I have an idea to add to every category of polish cemetery parameter parentsort with value name of village like I did in Category: Cmentarz Parafialny, Stara Kornica, Mazowieckie.

What do you think about?

Well done Tommy. I think this is a very good question. It is a good idea to sort this out now while Poland only has a small number of categories for cemeteries in Wikitree

I went ahead and made the changes to all the cemeteries in Maziowieckie to see what it looks like.  I do like this much better for cemeteries and is a great idea.  It will be much easier for anyone to navigate.  Thank you!!

Hello Skye, I see you have them sorted by village,  Does the CIB sort option now run more than just one letter, or is it still just the first letter of the village name being used to sort by?  Have the same problem in French (Cimetière de...)
I do know that you CAN sort by a first letter that starts with a diacritic if you wish.  The issue is that it will typically fall at the end of the English alphabet, and many people won't look there.  With the Polish alphabet the similar diacritic will line up after the letter.  For instance (as I see in the Gazetteer): the Ł will come after L.  On wikitree, the Ł will appear after Z, so we just incorporate those villages that start with the letter into the rest of the letter L.

We've been doing it by adding this text under the CIB: [[parentcategoryname|Lancut]] (vs. Łańcut.)  With the parentsort option in the CIB it accomplishes the same thing (I admit I like it better because it cleans up the page in edit mode.)  The things you learn! :)
I meant does it sort futher than one letter.  For instance, I have places like Montréal and Montmagny, nowhere near each other but as you can see, start the same.  So would need sorting with more than just the first letter.
I don’t know.  Would be a good question for Ales.

Danielle, if you look at Skye's example category, there are 2 different locations under "W", Warszawa comes before Wawrze, as you would expect.

If it works the same as the parent category plus pipe sorting, it sorts according to what you enter, so if you only put "W" you might not get the same result as entering the full location name, then you get the result as above.

Edited to add link to category

Thanks Margaret, will test this out tomorrow, not tonight.  Too late in the day for me. wink

Yes!  it works!  Thanks Margaret and everybody!

Great minds think alike!  This is already the standard protocol for Polish Cemeteries.  See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Categorization_Structure_for_Poland_Cemeteries

If I'm missing something please let me know.   If you're willing to work on creating cemetery categories, we'd love to have you help the Poland Project! :)

Skye, Cemetery Team/Poland Project Coordinator

ETA: Tina (the other coordinator) explained that you have added the |parentsort= to the CIB, which is a fantastic idea!  I don't have a problem with implementing it (nor would anyone else object).

Hi Skye,
Different Projects already identify Cemeteries by Location first:

I see the line you added, but I'm not understanding what it accomplishes or what the problem is.  Could you elaborate and give a before and after example?

Tina, see now Category: Mazowieckie, Cemeteries after Skye's changes. That's exactly what I meant.

I see the benefit in this.  We could have potentially 100s of cemeteries under the letter C (because many begin with Cmentarz).  What this does is alphabetize the cemetery by the village under the parent category.

Thanks Tommy!  This is Skye's area so I agree with her.  smiley
