College categorization

I'm trying to get this straight and want to get it right. I understand that US Colleges and Universities are to be categorized as school name, city/town, state.  I get it. Then I see Ohio State University, XXX Campus, City/Town, State. If a school has several campuses, why does it need to spell out XXX Campus? Just the city/town should do if the school is named correctly. (BTW the word "The" does belong with Ohio State.  We Buckeyes know this. hahaha. I didn't graduate, but my husband did.)

Anyway, is Ohio State's current set up correct as it stands? Need to know in case I meet up with more universities with multiple campuses. (Like Penn State.)

Hi Natalie

The Categorization Project has a general rule for category names not to start them with "The".  Dropping the article "The" from the beginning of names is a common practice, eg, see Ohio State University at Wikipedia or Ohio State University in the World University Rankings.

I know that, so I was keeping it light-hearted. Buckeyes like me were sort of TRAINED to use the article and pronounce it "THEE" Ohio State University.
Thank you, Maryann.

A related question would be categorizing colleges that have changed their names.  In 2002, Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland renamed itself as McDaniel College.  So you could create a perfectly correct category for McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland.

But don't put me or anyone else who graduated before 2002 in it, because WE graduated from Western Maryland, and we're VERY clear about that!

When they changed the name, they must have hired a quite incompetent PR firm because we all got letters offering us a frameable McDaniel diploma with our very own name on it.  Talk about adding insult to injury!
