I HAVE A PRINT BY THE ARTIST FREDERICK D OGDEN & WHEN CHANGING THE FRAME, I FOUND THE BACKING WAS A VERY OLD PICTURE & WONDER IF IT A PICTURE OF MR.OGDEN, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO RETURN IT TO THE FAMILY.

in Genealogy Help by
I'm sure that a relative of Frederick D. Ogden, artist, would love to see the photo. Perhaps it could be shown.  I am an Ogden, dad's side, and from the line of David Ogden, the Quaker. I believe, as have just found, that Frederick D. Ogden is a direct descendant of John Ogden, the Pilgrim. So anyone of that Ogden line might love to see/have this photo. Yet, I would love to see it, also. Once an Ogden, always an Ogden!

Thanks to PAT for offering to return the photo to family.

Mary "Ogden" Armstrong
Pat: I am an Ogden descendant, although I am unsure as yet if this Ogden is of my line I am preparing a work on the Ogden family and their impact on culture in America. It would appear there are no pictures of Frederick so if I use the image I should have to use it as "possibly" Frederick D Ogden. Who knows, maybe a wider audience for the man will scare up someone who can confirm the authenticity. Feel free to contact me directly, I would really like to put a face to Fredericks bio.

Gary,

A while back, I worked my way through the book: The Ogden Family in America, John Ogden the Pilgrim and his Descendants 1640-1906

https://archive.org/stream/ogdenfamilyiname00whee

It is FULL of great information. Lots of great Ogden family stories.

The Frederick that Mary is looking for is not included in the book, however.
well, in a stunning development I discovered Frederick was the first African American landscape painter. Supposedly born in GA, I would expect his middle name to probably be Douglas. It is very probable his family were owned by an Ogden family and highly likely he my have white Ogden ancestry. Many Ogden families owned slaves-and not just one or two either.
Fascinating! Hoping a connection can be made.
That is really interesting. Where did you discover the connection? Now to find the Ogden family in GA. Thank you for posting. And do add more when you find it.
I believe a Frederick D. Ogden is in this list, keep scrolling to find the name.

Now if the same Frederick, the artist, he is shown by AskArt, bio.  as:

Born in Hancock County on the Mississippi River in Illinois in 1892.  Is a direct descendant of John Ogden the Pilgrim, who settled in Southampton, Long Island in 1642.

Always associated with the arts, he earned a living variously as a musician, designer of stage scenery and engraver.  In recent years he has devoted his whole time to painting.  Self taught, he is a great admirer or the nineteenth century English landscape school.  Adapting what he has learned from his studies of these masters of the American landscape he knows and loves so well, his paintings have a sincerity and attention to detail seldom found among his contemporaries.

More info according to another art site:

About  Frederick Ogden
Born:  1892 - Augusta, Georgia
Died:   1948 - Wisconsin
Known for:  landscape, river view and portrait painting, illustrations, calendar art

Frederick D. Ogden was a fairly well known and respected American painter who lived during the first half of the twentieth century, whose landscapes were heavily influenced by the work of the Hudson River School. He was also one of the first African-American artists to be widely accepted for his art.

( maybe this helps to identify his background some as an artist, while not sure of his African-American background, parents, etc., would have been.  Note, some indicate his birth, 1891 or 1892.
According to the 1900 census a Fred D Ogden, age 8, race, white and his mother as Jennie H. Ogden. So who was she?)

I would like a scan of the guys' pic Pat...I have written previously that it has been said that Frederick was the first black landscape painter in the US but now I am not so sure, truth is your photo may settle the matter. The paintings seem SO English one cannot help but doubt the black theory but there appears to be no good info on this artist at all and what there is is contradictory

Gary
Was reading about Frederick D Ogdon and as noted at the bottom of the page it says marriage to an Augusta Hackel . She would be my great Aunt. We have many original Ogdon paintings and would like to put a face to the name
hello Patrick..I have traced this Frederick back to his source family in West Virginia. The poster did send me the photo they found, I have found no other photo of him anywhere so I can't compare it to anything, it may be the only photo of Frederick Ogden. It is interesting that you spell the name Ogdon as this was a traditional spelling for these Ogdens who originally came from Maryland, prior to that the info is murky. The claim that the WV Ogdens are related to the "Pilgrim" line of Ogdens from NJ is probably wrong although the WV Ogdens now believe they are from that line...only a Y-DNA test will ever prove or disprove this once and for all, but then also no one from the Pilgrim line has posted any Y-DNA results either for comparison so we may never find out for sure. Are you looking for a picture of Frederick? I'll send you what was sent to me but remember, this may not be him.
Sorry for the mispelling. It is ogden. I've  got an oil painting from him dated 1934 that I got from my grandfather who got it from my great  aunt gusty (Augusta). My mom said she met him when she was little, she's   85 now and  she seems to not remember him as African american, although all the research  says so. Could you send a copy of the picture so I can show my mother
Patrick, I hope the person who may have a photo of Frederick Ogden can send you a copy. Unless it is marked, then will be a maybe unless more can be found. Some of this artist's paintings of landscapes are online, so can be researched. I do not have  a photo of him.Sorry! He, I don't believe, is in my Ogden line but all is worth researching.
Patrick, send me your email and I'll zap you the pic-let me know if your aunt gives a positive ID..garymuyskens@yahoo.com
I am an Ogden From Georgia.  y-DNA test indicate our line came from John Ogden of Rye.

Hi Walker, I am familiar with your name through your association with my collaborator Louis Ogden. This batch of Ogdens is from the West Virginia Ogdens. Near as anyone can tell they are not related to our batch or the "Pilgrim" batch nor any branches from those, nor are they or the Quaker bunch. Louis believes they are from some indentured Ogdens who came to MD. An old "biography" of some of the WV Ogdens claimed they were of the "Pilgrim" line and it seems descendants of that line believe so too. Only Y-dna tests submitted and compared between the various known branches of Ogdens will ever help to bring clarity to this question. Unfortunately only Rye descendants and some outliers have submitted their results against Louis(of the Rye) and so there is a long way to go. We need known male descendants from all of the Ogden lines; the Pilgrim/Elizabeth Ogdens, the Fairfield Ogdens, the Cumberland Ogdens, the Quaker Ogdens, the "Masterson" Ogdens of TX, the Doctor Ogdens of Missagua Canada and the Ogdons of MD to post their Y-dna results on Louis Ogden's page on One World Family.net and then maybe we can actually say who these WV Ogdens came from. This goes for the Ogdens in Sulligent AL, the Ogdens of TN, the Ogdens of IN, the Ogdens of AR, and others.

OK got the picture. Will show it to my mother when I see her next week. Would be nice if this was a picture of him.
