McManus family from Ireland to Grand Falls, NB

Question

My ancestor Patrick William McManus was born in Ireland in 1839. His parents were Cornelius and Mary McManus. The death record of Patrick's brother Hugh says that Hugh was born in Leitrim. The family moved to Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, shortly after Patrick's birth and was living there at the time of the 1841 census.

I have been trying to discover where in Ireland this family is from but I've had no luck. Can anyone help me smash this brick wall?

If you are interested in yDNA direct male testing, there are several McManus branches from Ireland on FTDNA.  All various clans. You can join other Irish groups to compare yours with theirs.  One particular one, (Ireland Heritage) contains over 7400 yDNA testers and they are also doing BigY now.  My group has just tested 4 and we already have great information on county origin. Just like here, they moved from origin to another . . . so you never know where you might find them.  Another one is called McManus and the manager is an Ireland historian.  The BigY group has a "Go to person" that is well prepared to help interpret these tests and make them meaningful for you.  Not marketing this, just so you know.  Its took us 10 or more years to finally do something and the "database" is improving for Ireland.  Contact me if you are interested and I can give you the various project names that you can review.  Good Luck!  I'm finally getting the courage to learn about Ireland!

That sounds so interesting! I admit I don't understood how the DNA testing works too well, but if it might finally solve this mystery for me, I may have to splurge and pay the $100 or so for the test. Thank you Barbara!

A word of caution! Do not buy a test unless  you are certain of what that test can and cannot tell you.  Many folks buy those quick and easy 23 and me or autosomal tests  and don't realize they are not getting DIRECT MALE ancestry.  Male direct ancestry requires a yDNA test. No hurry, it'll always be there.  Good luck in your search.

Children are not always baptised or christened,shortly after birth,Being

Catholic there standards may differ.Had seen several family had there

children several years after birth.I think you know these records you are

looking at may not be there birth dates,I have seen a few records where

Christening record will also give birth date,But you must see original

document .But not always.

would like see earlier date,unless 1839 birth Patrick William is

about 1839.Saw no immigration record.Some immi records only show

First initial not full first name.

Thanks so much for your help! I'd come across this record as well, but Patrick had a few older siblings that seem to make this marriage unlikely to be the one I'm searching for. But again, I appreciate the assistance!

Patrick W. McManus died May 7 1914 age 80 ,say birth unknown,this

would have him born 1833 1834some records have 1839,That 1841 marriage may have some merit,What birth date did his brother Hugh Have??

This is odd, Patrick MacManus Baptised Nov 28 1839, Mohill, Leitrim,

Father Cornelius,Mother Mary Kevilehan.Roman Catholic.This is Catholic

church record.looks similar to other record i sentyou.

Hmm...that is weird...but also exciting! Can I ask where you found this record? I want to check if I can find Patrick's siblings as well!

Edited to add: Never mind - find it (FamilySearch.org). Can't seem to find any siblings. When you look at the images the events are recorded all out of order, makes me wonder if maybe the dates aren't exactly correct, which would explain the bapt. before the marriage!

How are you sure the Hugh you have is Patrick brother.??

They were Roman Catholic,saw no records for Leitrim available.

Look at all names,Patrick could be Patricium,Saw Cornelius,as Conn

Constatine Cornelius McManus,Saw no Mary Riley,might be O"Riley or

Reilley,No Hugh F., Many records in Ireland Destroyed.Catholic Church records are not complete.You might want too contact National Archives.

My grandmother was Margaret McManus - she came from the village of Carrigallen in Leitrim.  There are many families with the name McManus in Carrigallen.  I believe she emigrated to the U.S. between 1905 and 1915. She met my grandfather in Maine and might have come in through N.B. too
